Choosing a Gazebo Design

Category : Uncategorized

When it comes to building the perfect gazebo for your garden, there is a myriad of gazebo designs for you to choose from. The designs run from the simple four sided open gazebo to elegant architectural styles. There are expensive cedar gazebos as well as economical vinyl and aluminum designs. Any of these will make an elaborate addition to your landscape.

The canopy designs of gazebos are the least expensive and are easy to set up. They are also very portable so you can move them whenever you wish. This design is not suited for winter weather so you should take them down in the fall and set them up again in the spring. With wood and vinyl gazebos, you can also choose many different options and accessories in the line of rail and brace design, removable screens and windows, plus many others. If you choose wooden designs, you can choose to leave the wood unpainted or apply paint or stain for a customized look.

In the line of designs for gazebos, you will also find ready to use kits that contain the instructions and materials you need. Even if you are doing all the assembly on your own, you can easily have the gazebo completed in a few days. Why not invite a few buddies over and make it into an afternoon or a weekend project?

The simplest kinds of gazebos to erect are the metal or steel gazebos and these too come in various sizes and designs. These are completely portable, but if you want something permanent, you will need to pour a concrete floor, especially if you are building a hot tub gazebo. Whatever design you choose, make sure you check with your municipality to make sure that such a structure is allowed in your area.

Choosing Between Old and Contemporary Decorating Designs

Category : Uncategorized

When it comes to decorating the home, most people tend to mix and match their styles a little bit. Preferring a little touch of traditional decor as well as a little contemporary design thrown in too, often a mixture of designs can look quite stylish. The main thing that you have to keep in mind is that whatever theme or styles you do choose to use, they should suit your family and the activity which goes on within that particular room.

Choosing a Color and Pattern for the Room

Whenever you first start decorating and thinking of what you want the room to look like, one of the first things which you might be struggling with is the color that you will be using. With the large amount of choice available it can be difficult finding a color to suit your needs. You might also be worrying about which colors go together and which ones will clash. The main way to overcome this fear is to become more knowledgeable about the color wheel and to see generally which colors do go together the best.

If you manage to get the colors right as well as the pattern and the texture of a room then you will end up will beautiful results. Ideally you are aiming for rooms which are inviting and which make you feel comfortable enough to relax in them. In order to get the best results you will need to take into account the patterns and textures within the room. Look at the furniture, what kind of wood is used? What is the wood grain like? What types of worktops do you currently have? All of these things will make a difference as to what looks right and what doesn’t.

Planning Ahead

Before you do any decorating it is absolutely vital that you plan what you are going to do. If you don’t then how can you possibly end up with beautiful looking results? You will not know what goes with what and whether certain items of furniture will go together or not. So you need to plan ahead.

Think about what needs doing first. Perhaps you should start with the painting and tidying up the flooring in your home? A good clean before you do anything will really help too. So come up with a plan of action and decide what should be done first and how big of a job it is.

Usually it is the walls which take up the largest surface area of any room and so what you choose for them will generally affect the rest of the room too. This means that when it comes to choosing the color and the accessories which will go onto it, you need to pay extra special attention. The things which should be taken into account with the color of the walls is the size of the room, the lighting in the room and whether there are any architectural features within the room which you would like to draw attention to. Once you have thought about each of these things carefully then you will have a better idea about the theme which you want to use in the room.

Not everyone chooses to have a certain style when they decorate and this is fine. Your main concern will be to make the room stylish and comfortable. You can choose to either buy completely new furniture or whether to just simply rearrange everything so it just looks a little different.

Overall rooms which are designed really well can include more than one type of decorating style. So by using a mixture of traditional and contemporary furniture and styles, you should be able to create a nice inviting setting which allows you to relax and feel comfortable within your own home.

Bathroom Toilet Buying Guide

Category : Uncategorized

Today’s toilets are designed to match other products in your bathroom suite. This allows for a coordinated look in your bathroom, where the fixtures, faucets and accessories are matched in a complementary style and design.

Toilets come is several different variations:

Shape: Round front bowl or an elongated bowl.
Height: Standard height vs. comfort height ( ADA compliant)
Flush: Gravity flush vs. power/pressure flush vs. flush valve
Style One-piece or two-piece

Round front bowls are generally less expensive than their elongated counterparts. They are used in smaller bathrooms, where space and price may be an issue.

Elongated bowls are longer (front to back) by about 2-3 inches. This extra length makes elongated bowls more comfortable and a little roomier. If your bathroom has the additional space, the extra comfort of an elongated bowl is worth the extra cost.

ADA Compliant Toilets:

Many residential designs are beginning to use ADA compliant model toilets. The tank is the same, but the bowl is 1-1/2” to 2” taller than the standard bowl. This makes the toilet height approximately the same height as a standard chair and provides for easier seating. In fact they are often referred to as “Comfort” height toilets.

Two-piece toilets tend to be less expensive, are taller (27” to 30” high) and are often more traditionally styled

One-piece Toilets are more expensive and have a lower profile (22” to 27” high)

Toilet Terms:

Trapway – The trapway is the snake-like tubing at the sides of your toilet which water flushes through. The better designed and larger the trapway, the less chance there is for clogs. A fully glazed trapway also helps prevent clogging by providing a smoother passageway.

Skirted – Enclosing the trapway with a smooth covering, allowing for easy cleaning and an elegant look. Also called a concealed trap

Elongated Bowl – The bowl has an oval shape and extended front rim to provide maximum comfort, and added style.

Round Bowl – A more traditional bowl, the round design is ideal for bathrooms with limited space.

Flush Valve – Located at the center of the tank, this valve is activated by the toilet’s flush handle and releases the water held in the tank. A larger flush valve increases the water flow rate through the toilet.

Gravity Flush system – This system uses nothing more than water weight to generate flushing pressure. This time-tested design is quiet, simple, and requires less maintenance than other more complex flushing systems.

Pressure Assisted Flush System – A pressurized air tank assists the toilet’s flushing process. This system can be noisy and more expensive.

All toilets today use a maximum 1.6 gallons per flush. Manufacturers have redesigned the flushing mechanisms, bowls, and trapways to ensure a proper flush. This has led to a new type of toilet design – the pressure assisted toilet. Standard toilets use a simple “gravity” flush. Pressure assisted toilets use the water pressure from your plumbing system to create a more forceful flush.

Most toilets do not come with a toilet seat , but do not despair – there are plenty of choices that will match the style (round or elongated), and color of the toilet design. Click here to view toilet seats.

Dishwasher Tips For The Buyer

Category : Uncategorized

So, you think you need a new dishwasher, but you don’t know the why, where or how. Lucky for you we have a few basic pointers as to what to look for in a new dishwasher. So whether you’ve never owned a dishwasher before or are an old pro at buying dishwashers, there should be a few handy tips in here. Let’s just start off by saying, that you’ve made a great choice in getting a dishwasher at all. The modern models available are very water and energy efficient, plus have the extra benefit of being able to disinfect your plates and cutlery in a way you could never do by hand.

The Many Types Of Dishwashers

Actually, there really aren’t that many basic dishwasher types. There are two basic types, and they are portable, and undercounter. The manufacturers will hype a bunch of differences between the two, but there’s only one good reason why I would buy a portable. If I was living in a rental accommodation like an apartment, and I wanted to take the dishwasher with me when I left. Otherwise, an undercounter takes less space, and blends in much better with your existing kitchen. I suppose if money is a concern, then a portable wouldn’t have the installation costs that an undercounter would have.

Does Your Dishwasher Perform?

One of the biggest factors to influence the performance of your dishwasher, is the temperature of the water it is using. Manufacturers usually recommend that the hot water a dishwasher uses, be around 135 to 145 degreesfarenheit . If your water heater is not sending water to the dishwasher that is at least 120 degrees your dishwasher will under perform. Check the water at the tap nearest to your dishwasher with a thermometer to find out what temperature your dishwasher is using.

Size Does Matter

Consider the size of the dishwasher you’ll need. A family of two will need a smaller dishwasher then a family of six. Even if you have enough dishes to allow a family of two to wait over a week to run the dishwasher, it’s probably a bad idea to buy a bigger model. Dishwashers should be run at least once a week to keep them lubricated, and to prevent the seals from drying out. A smaller family should just get a smaller dishwasher, and run it more frequently.

Running Out Of Gas

In these days of energy conscious thinking, we should all do our part in minimizing our energy uses. While all dishwashers are required by law to meet minimum federal energy requirements, some do even better. Dishwashers with the ENERGY STAR logo, will use a minimum of 25 percent less energy than those who don’t. Your great great great grandchildren will thank you.

So, that should be enough to get started in the wonderful world of dishwasher shopping. Keep looking around till you find the one that fits your needs and lifestyle.

Tiffany Stained Glass Lamps – Natural Themes Are Timeless

Category : Uncategorized

The beauty of nature overcomes fashion and time… so if you’re looking for a timeless piece, you can’t go wrong with a natural theme based Tiffany lamp!

Case in point: Have you ever heard of Louis Comfort Tiffany? He’s the son of the founder of the famous and prestigious department store Tiffany & Co. Well, he loved everything beautiful, from fine jewelry to works of art, from homes to beautiful gardens. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth — so no wonder he loved everything beautiful. Because he could afford anything he wanted! Anyway, back in the good old days of 1900, or so, Louis Tiffany setup his own company called Tiffany Studios.

Tiffany studios produced amazing Tiffany stained glass lamps, from natural themes such as floral and insect… no. Not the disgusting kind such as a black beetles – apologies to anyone who’s got a fetish for black beetles – but beautiful insects such as dragonfiles, butterflies… those type of things.

Although stained glass lamps of a natural theme wasn’t the only type of theme Tiffany produced — as he created magnificent geometric style stained glass lamps as well — it was the natural themed stained glass lamps that really stood out from the crowd.

Anyway, times were not always rosy for Louis. Things were so bad that he had to stop production of certain Tiffany lamps and dramatically slash the prices of his other stained glass lamps he had in stock… because times were changing… interior decor of American homes were changing, and Tiffany lamps didn’t seem to have a place in these changing times. So he dropped the price of his lamps to shift the remain lamps he had in stock.

But that wasn’t the end of Tiffany lamps. Not by a long shot. There was always a whisper of a sale here and there, of a natural themed lamp; such as the wisteria lamp, or the dragonfly lamp… the dragonfly lamp is one of Louis’s most popular lamps I believe. And after 20 years of very slow sales in lamps (were now in the year 1920… or there about) a long lost log book indicated the sales of Tiffany lamps were on the rise. Like a phoenix from the ashes the sales of some of Tiffany’s natural themed lamps were on the increase. Even though the styles of lamps during this time had changed, and people were not buying Tiffany lamps in great numbers, every now and then a wisteria lamp… a cobweb lamp… or a dragonfly lamp would be sold. Or even created on demand — as one sales lodge had a comment on it saying “rush”, meaning the lamp was custom made.

Even as the styles of American people changed over time, people still bought Tiffany’s natural themed lamps… they managed to claw there way through the changing times and burst into the 21st century with such popularity and grandeur, that a Tiffany Cobweb reproduction lamp can go for more than a thousand dollars! And now Tiffany reproduction lamps are in a niche of there own, and the popularity of these lamps just keep on increasing.

Nothing Insulates Like Insulation – A Key Ingredient of A High Performance Home

Category : Uncategorized

In previous articles, we defined a High Performance Home and talked of the significance of energy saving windows and doors. Today we will explore insulation and its importance. As more evidence pours in to indicate the damage done by global warming, the need to build High Performance Homes becomes even greater.

First a definition from Wikipedia on the internet: “Insulation resists the flow of heat. Heat is a form of energy – it always travels from hot to cold – flowing outward in winter and inward in summer. By reducing heat flow, a properly insulated home uses less energy in winter for heating and less in the summer for cooling.” Here the operative term is “properly insulated”. There are several good products out there and they must be correctly installed to meet their potential.

Some of the different insulation materials common to our area (Texas) are: Fiberglass, Cellulose, Rockwool, and Foam. Exotics like earth berms, hay bales, used tires have yet to make their way into the mainstream of construction. For most applications they are not the best method to insulate your new home. For the insulation to function as it should, it needs to fill the voids in the wall cavity and provide coverage overhead as well.

Fiberglass may be installed stuffed into the wall cavity as a batt, either faced or unfaced. Imagine a thick blanket of spun glass fibers encapsulated in a paper bag that has a vapor retardant. Alternatively it could be that same thick blanket without the paper. Either way it is typically manually placed in the cavity by the installer, making sure to not crush the insulation, leaving it as fluffy as possible to maximize the dead air space that it contains. Another method of installing fiberglass is to blow it into the wall cavity with a glue to hold it together or placing a net over the studs in the wall to hold it in place until the wall receives sheetrock. Cellulose, made from recycled paper and treated with chemicals to retard burning and Rockwool made from fumed ceramic are similarly installed.

Foam is applied as a wet ingredient and expands to fill the cavity. It is interesting to watch the application as it looks as though the installer is spraying the wall cavity with paint and then it starts to grow several inches thick filling all cracks and voids in an extremely efficient manner. As you might guess it is my favorite type of insulation. Its only drawback is the cost which is considerably higher than the other types, but has impressive results and a quick payback due to lower utility bills.

The next consideration is how to insulate the area overhead. We can blow any of the above mentioned types of insulation on the top of the sheetrock that forms the ceiling. Or better yet, the latest method is to insulate the underside of the roof to make the entire attic space sealed from the environment and keeping the typically attic installed HVAC system in an insulated space. I have measured temperatures in the attic many times during the summer to try to get some idea of what is happening up there. The range during the hottest part of the day is around 160 degrees f. in an attic where the ceiling has been insulated. Surprisingly it is only 85f where the underside of the roof has been insulated. With a sealed attic space the HVAC systems just works better.

Now it’s time for the myth busting. Ventilating your attic will lower your utility bills, right? Wrong! You would need a ventilation hole big enough to fly a Cessna aircraft through to get any relief from the heat that builds up in the attic space. So why not just insulate the underside of the roof and make the entire attic cooler? I bet I get some emails on that one. And you can too. Just use the address below.

In the thirty years that I have been building there have been a lot of changes. I’m disheartened when I see people building them like we did 15 years ago because they have not kept up with the technology. Here are some helpful links if you would like to know more:

Low Cost Kitchen Remodeling

Category : Uncategorized

Thinking of remodeling your kitchen but do not have enough budget? Different alternatives and cheaper options now make it possible.

Most people who remodel their kitchen want everything new and to have it done professionally: but neither is really necessary for your kitchen to have a fresh new look. If your kitchen furniture and appliances are not outdated or broken you can still make use of them. Cleaning may be all that is needed for them to look almost as good as new…

Your kitchen cabinets can still be used as long as they are not marred or broken. For a new look, paint them with a new color. A brighter color might be a good choice to give your kitchen a fresh look.

You can opt to have laminate countertops and vinyl floors installed instead of the more expensive synthetic tiles and granite materials. These alternative materials can look just as elegant as their expensive counterparts.

For a brighter kitchen, consider changing your lighting fixtures. Fluorescent fixtures are one choice and the bulbs now less expensive than in the past.

As for the kitchen appliances, as long as they still serve their purpose, it is best to keep them. If you think that they are not energy efficient and you want to purchase new ones try to find appliance sales or consider second-hand appliances. Just be alert and patient and you will find new or used appliances at a bargain price. Another viable option might be garage or moving sales in your area.

Online auctions can also be a source. Many people sell through online auctions. Extra precaution is needed when participating and bidding in these auctions. Before you try to bid on an appliance that interests you, do some research and determine if the seller is legitimate. Check for feedback from other users about the seller. You may want to think twice if there is negative feedback for that seller.

These are just some suggestions on how you can have a remodeled kitchen for less money. Something that looks good need not be expensive. There are always cheaper alternatives to almost anything.

Your Whole House Air Purifier

Category : Uncategorized

If you have radon, a whole house air purifier is the only way to protect your family. Radon seeps in through your crawl space or basement. It is found naturally in soil and in rock in certain areas. But, there is only one way to know if you have radon. Contact your state and ask for a free testing kit. Most states have them. If the test is positive, it is critical that you buy an air purifier. You can be certain that a whole house air purifier is your only defense in the battle against radon.

The Whole House Air Purifier to the Rescue. Whole house air purifiers can remove many troubling issues. Mold spores, dust, pet dander, smoke fumes, some radon, and pollen can all be captured in an air purifier’s filters. If you are prone to allergies, whole house air purifiers can also be very beneficial.

A whole house air purifier as it applies to radon is set up in your basement or crawl space. A fan vents the radon-rich air out from the basement or crawl space floor. Metal ducts pump the air from the fan of the air purifier inside the basement or crawl space into the outside air. Sealing up cracks and any gaps where air can get in will practically eliminate any radon threat.

Other air purifiers can also remove radon from inside your home. They can remove radon from upper floors. These air purifier systems can have an optional filter installed that remove the radon gas and clean the air of other contaminants. If you have a problem with dust, mold, or mildew, these whole house air purifier systems can eliminate those problems while also protecting you from radon.

Benefits

There are benefits to buying whole house air purifiers. The air purifier’s unit is placed in your basement or furnace room. For that reason, the noise is not an issue. Most furnace rooms are placed well away from living areas. You will not hear the air purifier when it runs, so noise is no longer an issue.

A whole house air purifier will take care of the majority of your living space. If you live in a home with multiple levels, only one air purifier system will be needed. Eliminating the need for two or more air purifiers can ease your budget considerably.

Cost

Granted, the price of whole house air purifiers can be twice or three times the cost of single room air purifiers. If one single air purifier unit is not controlling your dust, dander, and pollen issue, however, you may need to look into whole house air purifiers. No single air purifier unit will control radon. If radon is your issue, whole house air purifiers become necessary!

You may think a whole house air purifiers costs a lot of money. In fact, they are expensive, but not as expensive as you are thinking. For around a thousand dollars, you can have a reliable air purifier system. You can breathe the air in your home without fear. No cancer, no deteriorating lung tissue. You’ll be breathing clean, fresh air!
