When laying out slate it is also important to dampen the tiles. This will give you an idea of what they will look like once the stone has been sealed. The moisture from the water seeps into the stones pores, much like a sealer eventually will, bringing out a variety of colors and contrasts which were invisible before.
Once you have decided on the layout of your tiles, it is often helpful to label them with small numbers on the back or sides, to help with laying them out. Markings should be done in pencil, so that any stray markings or exposed edges can easily be washed clean. You should also be certain to make a note of how the sequence is supposed to be laid out, whether vertically, horizontally, backward, or forward.
It is helpful to have a contractor or installer that has an artistic eye when dealing with natural stone. When choosing to hire someone, you should try and get a look at their portfolio to see some of the work they have created. It is then applied (poured or blown-in) into place, either as loose-fill or wet-sprayed with the use of a machine.
-Rock wool. As the name implies, rock wool is an insulating material that is made from rock. Manufactured similarly to that of a fiberglass (with molten rock replacing glass), rock wool can be in the form of a hollow brick or a porous concrete block.
-Synthetic insulation. Synthetic insulating materials are manufactured in several forms, some of which are the following:
Polystyrene foam – usually as rigid, pre-cut boards.
Polyurethane foam – usually as boards or foamed ‘insitu’ (“in position”).
Spray-on expanding foam – similar to that found in aerosol cans, it can completey seal and insulate even the smallest areas in the house by ‘poofing’ up to as much as 2 to 4 times the original size when applied.
Deciding on the right material to be used for installation largely depends on the area that requires installation. Below are some of the standard insulating materials that are recommended for the specific areas in your home:

A Heat Pump is essentially the same as an air conditioner, but with one extra feature added. On cold days, a heat pump reverses its operations and heats the house instead of cooling it. What makes heat pumps stand out among other heaters is their heat gain. Today’s heat pumps at 0 Degrees Celsius outside return 3kw of heat for every 1 kw of electricity fed into them. It sounds too good to be true and immediately begs the question: Why don’t we use heat pumps in Toronto?
Low efficiency used to be the main reason. Up to 2006, most heat pumps were based on low-efficiency 10 SEER air conditioners, and they could not run at low outdoor temperature. In 2006 manufacturing of new units with less than 13 SEER efficiency was outlawed. Virtually overnight, new heat pumps’ efficiency increased by almost 30% and kept rising.
Heat Pump Pro’s
1. Heat pumps can be used in Toronto almost year-round. Air conditioners are only used for a few short weeks of summer.
2. The price difference between heat pumps and air conditioners is becoming smaller and smaller. Ductless units lead the way. Today ductless heat pumps cost only $200 more than their equivalent air conditioners. At this small premium, ductless heat pumps are already a no-brain winner against ductless air conditioners.
3. Central air heat pumps may still cost $1000 more that equivalent central air conditioner, but even at this premium a heat pump is an easy choice instead of an air conditioner if you use electricity, propane, or oil for heating.
4. “Smart” hydro meters are coming. Here in Toronto, electricity at night and on the weekends will cost only 3.2 c per kilowatt. At this price and at 300% efficiency, electricity is becoming the energy of choice for heating.
5. Heat pumps take advantage of global warming. As winters in Toronto are getting milder, heat pumps are becoming more profitable.
6. No reason to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning or fuel (gas, propane, oil) escape inside of the house.
Heat Pump Con’s
Heat pumps need supplemental heat. This can come from either a fuel-based furnace or an electric heater. There are two main reasons for this.
1. Because the same system is used for both heating and cooling, the heat pump is limited by the smaller of the two needs – the cooling one. On the coldest days of winter, the heating capacity of the heat pump may not be sufficient.
2. Cold outdoor temperature can also lower the heating capacity of the heat pump to the point where it has to be turned off and backup heat needs to be brought in.
Supplemental heat is not as a big a deal as it sounds. A couple of electric strips can be easily accommodated by the ductwork at a cost of a few hundred dollars. On the other hand, it may spare you buying a new furnace at $3,000.
And last, but not least – you can finally get rid of fuel heat inside of your house. People and fuels don’t really mix well in the same space.

Let’s get back to basics, shall we? So many design resources jump right into picking the right color for your space. But I haven’t seen many resources online that really start at the beginning. This series of articles will summarize the five principles that all designers learn in Interior Design 101. These are the first stepping stones to great design!
The first principle is Balance.
There are three styles of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial.
Symmetrical balance is usually found in traditional interiors. Each side of a room is an exact mirror of the other. This symmetry also reflects the human form, so we are inately comfortable in a balanced setting. It lends itself easily to creating a focal point in a room, since wherever the “mirror” is placed, the eye will focus there. Since symmetry is so easy to achieve, be careful not to fall into a habit of laziness, which can lead to rooms that are dull and monotonous.
Asymmetrical balance is often used in contemporary rooms. It is more informal that symmetrical balance, and is sometimes referred to as active balance. As defined in “Inside Today’s Home”, asymmetry
“results when visual weights are equivalent but elements differ in size, form, color, pattern, spacing or distribution on either side of an invisible center axis.”
Nature itself is never symmetrically balanced. Using asymmetrical balance in human spaces achieves a harmony with nature — note the designs of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Falling Water, in particular, demonstrates this principle.
Asymmetry suggests movement, and leads to more lively interiors. There are no rules, per se, so it is much easier for the do-it-yourselfer to achieve. And frankly, it is more convenient in that it allows you to design the space more efficiently.
Finally, radial symmetry is when all the elements of a design are arrayed around a center point. The Guggenhem Museum in New York is an excellent example. A spiral staircase is also an excellent example of radial balance. Though not often employed in interiors, it can provide an interesting counterpoint if used appropriately.
