Advantages Of Portable Air Conditioning

Category : Uncategorized

There are several types and models of portable air conditioning systems that you can choose from when you finally decide that you need cooler air in your environment. While there are many kinds of air conditioning units and systems, the portable air conditioning system is by far the most convenient and economical. With a variety of models and types, you can pretty much have the unit that best suits you.

Portability Benefits

Portable air conditioning systems are easy to move to other locations that require cooling. Usually having wheels on the bottom or light enough to carry from room to room, the portable air conditioning unit is a very handy appliance. With larger units, this simply is not possible due to the weight and installation requirements. This is yet one more reason to have portable air conditioning units in your home. You can even take these portable units with you when you travel. Taking the portable air conditioning unit to the cottage for the weekend for example, is very possible and easy to do.

Energy Efficiency Of Portable Air Conditioning Units

Because these units are smaller and generally much more economical to operate, the energy efficiency is very high. Therefore, for those families worried about spending too much money on the cooling needs of their home, these systems are ideal. Because they are energy efficient, these types of appliances are also better for the environment as well.

Cost Efficiency Of These Units

These portable units are much cheaper and more effective than many larger models and so if budget is a factor, rest assured these would not break your bank. Some portable units are even powered by battery and so do not require that an electrical outlet even be nearby. College dorm rooms can benefit from these small and efficient appliances as well.

Watch For Deals

Be sure to do your research and keep your eyes open for special deals – especially in the months leading up to summer. Many stores will feature deals on systems in anticipation of higher demands as warmer weather hits so be ready. It is always a good idea to compare various models and types of units that you are interested in, online first. However, remember that online companies may add a high shipping charge to the price of the unit so the deal may not actually be as good as buying locally.

Table Pads – I Think this Covers Everything

Category : Uncategorized

The term table pads refers to a number of different things, all of which are essentially table top pads that serve to cover and protect the surface of the table somehow. Normally table pads go beneath a table cloth, if there is one. There is some variety in table pads available, ranging from rigid-surfaced table top pads that fold up along hinges, to soft vinyl covers that simply sit over the top. The materials used can vary a fair bit, as do the intended purposes.

The range of materials used includes simple cloth, vinyl or hard plastic, water-proofed weave (much like a mattress protector), soft felt, and wool for poker tables.

As well as serving as a surface protector it is possible to find certain themed table cover pads that serve to add some functionality to your table. For example, card game enthusiasts may be interested in felt poker table pads which go over the top of whatever table you’re using and give the effect of a card table that you’d find in a casino. Avid card players are rewarded with a more convenient playing surface suited to the task and a more authentic feel.

There are smaller pads available called dining table pads, or place-mats, which are small cloth or vinyl table pads that sit on top of the table cloth or table surface, one at each position on the table. The purpose is simply to catch any drips or spills that may occur at the dining table and prevent the table cloth from being soiled, since it is easier to clean small dining room table pads than the whole table cloth each time there is a minor accident.

In addition to the ones mentioned you can find large, hard, table cover pads that fold up along hinges. These are particularly useful if you have a fine wooden table that you wish to prevent damage to the surface during day to day use so you have an undamaged surface to present guests with on special occasions. If a loss of authenticity concerns you, you may consider table top pads in a wooden veneer finish so as not to spoil the effect.

Due to their fairly simple construction, most table top pads start at about US$30 and reasonable quality dining table pads can be bought for as little as $5. The folding rigid table pads will cost more especially if they have a pattern like imitation wood veneer. You can get higher quality pads tailor made to your table if you’re willing to pay more still. The most expensive of the table pads are usually the felt poker table pads which vary greatly in quality, but can cost as much as $200 or possibly even more if you have a large custom-order.

Candle Making Supplies

Category : Uncategorized

Candle making can be a fun creative hobby. It can also be a great business opportunity.

There are a number of methods used to make candles. Molds, votives, and containers are three items used to shape the molten wax into candles. The wax itself can come from several different sources. Bee wax, soy wax, and other gel-like substances can be used to make candles.

The type of container or mold used to make a candle usually dictates which type of wax is needed. For example, pillar waxes have a high melting point and are good to use with molds and pillars. Pillar and mold candles are usually freestanding, meaning that they are removed from their containers once they have hardened. Votive waxes have a lower melting point than pillar waxes and are good for use in metal votive candleholders as well as some containers. Container waxes are similar to votive waxes in that the candles created are not meant to be freestanding. Wax for container candles has a lower melting point and is designed be poured into jars or pots used as candleholders.

Aside from the wax and the mold or container, candle makers can add their own personalities to the mix by coloring the candle or giving it a scent. There are an endless number of dyes available to color a candle in any shade imaginable. Truly skilled and creative candle makers can add multicolored swirls and scents to a candle. These soothing aromas are spread throughout the room when the candle is burned. Some of the most popular of these scents are vanilla and cinnamon.

Candle making is a fun and easy-to-learn activity that the whole family can enjoy. Well-made candles can add to the appearance of a room and give off a pleasing smell.

Consider color first

to nature, from the landscape to agriculture, so choose from these rich, earthy
tones: golden olive oil, terracotta, luscious olive green, deep browns, rich
burgundy, Mediterranean blues, burnt orange and golden yellow. These colors
may be made to look weathered or muted to create an attractive, timeless

One of the main features of Tuscan—Italian décor is the abundant use of

Tips for a Successful Garage Sale

Category : Uncategorized

If you have just completed decluttering your entire house you might be overwhelmed by the pile of items you have set aside for a garage sale. How will you ever get them organized? Don’t panic. All you need to do is break the project down into smaller, more manageable tasks.

Sorting through clutter and turning it into an organized garage sale is a perfect project for a timer. When you being sorting, set a timer for 15 minutes. When the timer rings, walk away for at least an hour, but no more than one day. When you are feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work, set your timer again.

The first thing you will want to do is to sort your large pile into smaller, less overwhelming piles. Start by placing similar items together. For example: furniture, kitchen items, clothing, toys, etc.

Next, working one pile at a time, begin pricing the items, making sure to place the price sticker where it will be easily visible. Many items within your piles will be able to be grouped together. For example, books can be placed in a small box with the spine facing up so the titles are visible. Create a sign for the outside of the box, such as “Books $1.00 each.” A good rule of thumb when pricing items for a garage sale is 10% – 30% of the original cost, depending on the condition of the item.

On the day of the sale, begin setting up at least two hours prior to the posted starting time for the sale. This way you are sure to be ready when the first customers arrive. Place large, clear signs around your neighborhood directing people to your sale. Put balloons on your mailbox or attached to a sign near the street in front of your house to catch the attention of passers by.

Set up your display tables with plenty of room between them for people to walk around without bumping into anything or anyone. Create zones, similar to the departments in a department store, keeping together the groups of items you previously sorted. Place similar zones near each other. For example, you might place the zone of household items, next to the zone of items specific for the kitchen. The more logical your layout the easier you will make it for people to find things.

Throughout the day be sure to make yourself as visible as possible. Offer to answer questions for people who seem to be thoroughly investigating an item, and always be prepared for price negotiations. People come to a garage sale looking for a bargain. If you notice somebody deliberating over an item, offering to decrease the price will often tilt the scales in your favor and make the sale.

Straighten up your items as often as possible, keeping them as visible as possible and consolidating items to tighten up any empty spaces created by items that have been purchased. If you have a few minutes of downtime and you have been able to consolidate items enough to empty an entire table, use your downtown to break down the empty table and put it away. Doing this will make clean-up at the end of sale easier and faster.

When the garage sale is over donate any leftover items to charity. Be sure to make a list of these items for tax purposes.

Leaving Shoes at the Door Keeps Carpets Like New

Category : Uncategorized

If you could do one simple thing and have a much cleaner house, carpets that look like new, and a reduction in the number of chemicals and bacteria in your home, would you do it? You might be surprised to find out that you can just by removing your shoes before coming into the house.

More and more Americans are making habit of removing shoes before entering their home. It used to be a custom more widely observed in Asia, but as Asian decorating and customs grab hold in America, we’re beginning to see more and more households ban shoes upon entering the home here in America.

In the late ‘80’s, I lived on a Johnston Atoll, a small island about a thousand miles southwest of Honolulu. Living there and traveling through Hawaii on a fairly regular basis, it became second nature for me to remove my shoes before entering someone’s home. It only took one or two very nasty Hawaiian scowls before I learned to leave my shoes at the door. Over time I began to notice how clean the floors were in the home. Walking in bare feet or socks, my soles were never dirty. And, I noticed that the carpets also looked like new.

Once I became a homeowner, I adopted the custom of removing shoes before entering the house. If you’ve just moved into a new home, installed new carpet, or if you’re just tired of always cleaning the floors, consider adopting the habit of leaving shoes by the entrances to your home before coming in. More than just a nicety or custom, removing shoes before entering a home makes good sense. After walking into public restrooms, city streets, yards where there are animals, and so on, bacteria and filth is not only carried into the home on the soles of shoes, but that same dirt and grime gets trapped in carpets.

If you still aren’t convinced this habit is for your household, consider these EPA findings. In 1991 the EPA conducted a study called the “Door Mat Study” that measured the amount of lead dust in homes. The study found that in homes where there was a doormat at the entrance and where shoes weren’t worn, there was a marked reduction (about 60%) of lead dust and other chemicals in the home. Not only that, but in homes where shoes are removed, there was a reduction in allergens and bacteria being tracked into the house.

One carpet manufacturer’s website also explains that when you wear dirty shoes in your home, the carpet acts like a “cleaner” for the shoes, scraping off debris and dirt from the shoe. Over time, the carpet becomes saturated by the debris and a stain begins to spread into a “lane.” That’s why walking in one area of a carpet, a stain can become much larger over time. Essentially, the carpet has absorbed so much dirt that it’s gone past the point of saturation and spread out.

If that still doesn’t convince you, then think about how much longer and nicer your carpets and floors will stay and how much easier it will be to clean if shoes aren’t permitted in the house. When you look at it this way, it’s not hard to remove your shoes before entering.

What else can you do to keep floors and carpets clean? To keep floors clean and carpets looking newer longer, don’t wear shoes in the house. Have carpets steam cleaned once or twice a year, and avoid using carpet cleaners that use surfactants (soap). Even some professional carpet services use soap-based cleaners. Avoid these because these products will attract more dirt and make carpets dirtier faster.

Instead, choose carpet cleaning products recommended by the Carpet and Rug Institute ( carpet-rug.org/” target=”_new www.carpet-rug.org). Be sure to vacuum once or twice a week, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or vacuum bag to trap lead dust and other chemicals or allergens. Don’t forget to put good quality door mats by every entrance to help trap dirt and debris outside.

With these tips and a no shoe policy, your carpets and floors will look better than ever, and you might just find that you buy fewer socks, too!

Interior Design with a Personal Touch

Category : Uncategorized

Every person wants to be recognized as an individual with special skills, values and talents. These attributes are often displayed in the way we dress, the way we act, the friends we choose and yes, the way we decorate our homes.

For instance, interior designers believe that choosing glass as a means of interior decorating speaks about attributes such as inner beauty, fragility, tenderness and luxury. It’s in romantic natures to opt for tiffany lamps or crystal chandeliers. Yet, these are expensive products. Wouldn’t it be better to try a little interior decoration of our own?

A personal design mirrors our very essence, hidden feelings and traits we often disregard. Is it safe to expose them? Is it safe to let people know who we really are? Yes, because that’s what it takes to make out of interior decorations a real art: to give something to the world, to create.

Creating our own interior design means taking a personal risk. It’s not fear, it’s just the emotional stress: whether the design we have in mind will come to fruition as we picture it or not, whether people will see it as we do and accept it as a work of art, as a statement of personality or they will just reject it, thus rejecting us.

No matter what, as long as it comes from the heart, this interior design, as any artwork, will be rewarding. Are you willing to take the risk? It would be safe to follow trends, to imitate what you see in magazines. You will not fail: those are professionals; they do interior design for a living. Follow their advice; even hire one if you want, but then, where is your real reward? You’ll hear from your friends: “Wow! This is great!” But is this really for you? To do so is to ruin your own talent.

So look inside yourself, think what really matters to you. Let’s say you have a thing for dream catchers. So create a design where the dream catcher will fit: ambiguous shapes and shades, obscure lights, fantastic pictures on the walls. If the world you imagine doesn’t exist, create your own world! Let your passion drive your mind: don’t be afraid to use unusual materials. Anything will do: from broken glass and marbles to tree branches, from dried plants and feathers to paper folds, from broken pieces of a mirror to wood chips or metal accents, from sea shells you color with acrylics to unexpected artworks on canvas.

It’s sometimes hard, but don’t give up. Great works of art need time and you have time on your side. There’s no rush. Your home is your temple, so make it holy for you!

Don’t be afraid of what people think. They cannot see the world as you do. They do not feel the same, nor think the same. But when your work is done, astonishing in its beauty, they do not need to understand its meaning but to know it’s unique: as unique as its creator – YOU.

Fun, Cheap Cinder Block Projects for Your Family

Category : Uncategorized

Cinder block projects offer many neat possibilities around not only your lawn but the inside of your home as well. This is particularly true if you have children. From the smallest to the oldest there are many projects you can do with cinderblocks and pieces of wood that will follow them through the many years while allowing flexibility for paint and adaptation with age and interests. I’ve seen many people take the cinder block fashion statement to the dorm room with them as well.

Cinder Block Book Shelves

The key when it comes to many cinder block projects is creativity and imagination. You can standard ideas and expound on them in many ways. Start with a simple set of floor to ceiling shelves. These can be done in almost any room in your home and are relatively inexpensive to make. Add to that the estimated ‘shelf life’ if you’ll pardon the pun and you will find that you can get an excellent return on investment for this incredible kid furniture. I recommend painting the cinder blocks and the wood pieces for these shelves in colors that are most definitely kid friendly.

Make sure that you are placing the proper support for the wood at proper intervals. You do not want too much unsupported weight, as it will cause the wood to bow. I personally prefer no more than 3 feet without support. This means if your shelves are six feet long you will need 3 blocks minimum per shelf placed at appropriate intervals.

Do this for each shelf, you may want to alternate the location of the blocks but make certain that there are no more than 3 feet between blocks on any one shelf. Just remember that you aren’t limited to bookshelves. Other great cinder block projects for kids room includes desks, tables, and bench seating. Your kids will love it and it is nearly indestructible.

Cinder Block Projects for the Great Outdoors

Cinder blocks are excellent choices for seating barbecue pits, for pavers in walkways, and have even been used as planters by those with a creative spark and a taste for the funky and trendy deco art that we see in many emerging areas. The truth of the matter is that you are the only limitation when it comes to possibilities for cinder block projects. Some of my favorite cinder block projects are those that take place out doors. You can do all kinds of wonderful things with cinder blocks from creating walkways to establishing borders between your garden and your lawn.

If you need more cinder block projects for the great outdoors try a raised cinder block garden. You begin by laying landscaping cloth down then line up your cinder blocks into either a rectangle or square on top of the cloth. You will then fill the block with top soil and whatever plants you intend to place in them. It is recommended that you do not use plants that cannot stand the heat as cinderblocks warm up rather well. You should also take care that you are providing enough water to your garden in order for it to properly grow.

These are but a few of the many great cinder block projects that can not only be a great deal of fun but also offer a great sense of accomplishment. Many of these projects, especially the painting of the cinder blocks and the planting of the garden are great projects for your children to help out with, which is always great fun for all involved.
