Guidelines for Picking and Grading Lumber for Building Cabinets

Category : Uncategorized

Once you know if you’re going to use softwood or hardwood for your cabinet building project, now you should get acquainted with the grades of wood and how to pick them. The many different species of wood are all cut into lumber and are graded on a scale. This scale varies from the best to the worst. The top grade (therefore the most expensive!) can be almost flawless, while the bottom grades may be virtually unusable. Each board has defects and this is how the lumber is rated.

When making cabinets, you need to decide on which grade is the lowest acceptable for your application. If a natural finish is desirable than purchase the top-grade lumber, but if you plan on painting your cabinets, you can purchase a lower grade lumber. Remember the old saying “paint makes it what it ain’t?!” Well, it’s true; paints can hide a lot of defects!

If you’re going to use softwoods, which are the easiest woods to work with in making cabinets, then you’ll need to choose the appearance-graded boards. The two main grades of the appearance boards are Select (or Clear) and Common. Each of these grades also has sub-grades beneath them. The lumberyard also sells “dimension lumber”, which is graded for strength, but you probably will want to use the appearance-graded lumber. The dimension lumber is usually used in house framing because of its strength, but it is also used in woodworking where extra strength or thickness such as bookshelves is needed. Use a “Select Structural”, as this is the top of the line in this category.

If you want wood with no knots and is flawless, look for the C and better Select grade lumber. Other good choices would be Common “knotty” pine No. 2 and No.3. Watch out for Common boards marked Construction or Standard-and-Better. They would be fine for utility shelves, but you might not want them for your kitchen cabinets! For the final test, let your eye be the judge. What you see and like is what you should use.

To make matters even more complicated, some kinds of lumber species have their own grading! Typically, the Redwood and Idaho White Pine fall in this area. Redwood is categorized in this descending order of the quality of the lumber: Clear All Heart, Clear, B Grade, Select Heart, Select, Construction Heart, Construction Common, Merchantable Heart and Merchantable. Idaho White Pine is categorized in this order: Supreme, Choice, Quality, Sterling, Standard and Utility. Wow! What a selection!

If you have your heart set on using hardwoods, you should know that they’re graded a little differently than softwoods. The number of defects in a given length and width of the board are considered. The best grades are the First, Seconds and then there is a mix of these two which are called “FAS”. These boards are clear wood at least eight feet long and six inches wide.

Your eye should be the final decision on buying your lumber. You know what type of wood would look good in your kitchen or den. Remember that the wood you buy is the starting point or your project! The workmanship remains in you hands!

How Do Home Water Filtration Systems Work?

Category : Uncategorized

There are two common types of water filtration used in top rated home water filters. Carbon filters and reverse osmosis filters use different techniques to remove such contaminants as bacteria, sediments, chemicals, metals and odor.

Simply stated, carbon filters work by passing water through one or more filtering compounds, whereas, reverse osmosis passes water through layers of filtering screens to remove contamination and impurities, then uses water to wash the screens.

Here is how a carbon filter works:

Water is passed through either granular activated carbon (GAC) or a carbon block which removes sediments, micro-organisms and organic compounds.

Some filters will use a micron membrane to remove sand and silt as an initial filtration stage.

Depending on the size and quality of the unit, water may pass through up to 7 or even 8 levels of filtration with each level removing more and more contamination.

Some filtration companies are now using KDF which is a patented medium for fluid filtration to enhance the capabilities of a carbon filtration system.

Studies have determined that GAC and KDF used in combination within a filter unit have a greater capacity to remove contamination than carbon filtration alone.

Carbon filters need to be replaced regularly based on the manufacturers instructions.

Reverse Osmosis water filtration works like this:

Water is first passed through a pre-filter screen to remove sediments and larger particles from the water.

Next water is passed through an even smaller screen to remove very small particles (bacteria, heavy metals, etc).

The third step is passing the water through a carbon filter to complete the filtration process.

As contaminants build up on the filtration screens, the reverse osmosis system uses water to wash the screens – called backwashing. This process can create a lot of waste water; as much as double the amount of water that was purified.

So which type of water filter should you choose?

That depends on your budget and you water usage. Generally, for home use a carbon filtration system provides adequate water purification at a lower cost that reverse osmosis water filtration systems. Reverse osmosis water filters require more water flow for the backwash process – potentially increasing your water bill. You will also need abundant water pressure for a reverse osmosis water purification to work properly.

Generally, it’s our thinking that the higher level of water purification provided by a reverse osmosis water filter may be worth the cost if you have a family member with a very severely compromised immune system and you have the water flow to sustain the system. Otherwise, the less expensive and less complicated carbon filtration system will provide the average household with plenty of safe, clean water.

Alternative Heating – Room For Everyone

Category : Uncategorized

Even if you owned a million dollar townhouse in Boston’s Back Bay, there just isn’t enough room on a 25’ x 100’ lot for a townhouse, small deck, a couple of parking spaces AND a closed loop geothermal heating system.

However, a roof top solar system for hot water would be doable if you could get the idea past the Historical Preservation groups.

If you live in high humidity Alabama, the environmentally friendly swamp cooler will never be a viable substitute for more expensive air conditioning.

Only when you narrow down the choices for alternative heating based on where you live, can you begin to focus your time and energy on the most relevant, cost effective heating solution.

Urban Alternative Heating

Geothermal, outdoor furnaces and most wind power are not suitable for urban or small-lot suburban homes. Except for very small wind turbines (i.e., with rotors one meter or less in diameter) on very small towers, a property size of one acre or more is desirable.

Wood burning stoves have been used in urban areas for as long as I can remember. I bought my first air tight stove in 1976. Corn and wood pellet stoves are quickly gaining acceptance as new installations or replacements for existing wood stoves.

One Connecticut pellet stove dealer I spoke with said he sold so many wood pellet and corn stoves last winter he was forced to temporarily close one of his two stores for lack of product.

An adaptation of the wood or pellet stove is the fully vented fireplace insert. They are comparably priced to freestanding stoves and offer a simple way to turn an otherwise inefficient fireplace into a source of heat for multiple rooms.

Unvented gas log fireplaces or propane space heaters are less expensive to purchase and install but are controversial with respect to health risks and are prohibited in some localities. Make sure the unit you purchase has an ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensor). This safety device turns off the heater when the oxygen in the room drops below 18%. (Normal is around 21%)

Decorative gel fireplaces are nice to look at, but aren’t considered legitimate heating devices.

Electric and hydronic (hot water) radiant heat are extremely versatile and can be installed anywhere. The hydronic application of radiant heat can be fueled by anything from corn to gas and can be adapted to heat driveways, hot tubs and of course, your home.

Solar for hot water is on the rise in urban areas. A neighbor of mine in the Port Norfolk section of Boston recently installed a solar array on the roof of his two family home. His contractor did a first rate job and it doesn’t detract from the visual appeal of his house at all. He also says his hot water bill now costs him “chump change”.

Let’s not forget the lowly space heater. For many homeowners who spend most of their time in only one room of an eight room house, an inexpensive space heater is often the first choice to supplement their conventional heating system.

Suburban Alternative Heating

Suburban lot sizes can run anywhere from ¼ of an acre to three acres. But even a quarter acre lot opens up the possibility of a vertical closed loop geothermal system.

A three acre lot will afford you the space to install a slightly less expensive horizontal closed loop geothermal system, a wind turbine or even an outdoor wood, pellet or corn furnace.

At approximately $5000, the outdoor furnace is your least expensive option. A quality 1,800 watt wind turbine and tower can be purchased for $7,000. If geothermal is your system of choice, a new, 3,000 sq. ft. home can be heated and cooled for around $20,000.

If you partner with a program such as Energy Crafted Home in Connecticut, it’s possible to receive a rebate of $713 per ton of geothermal heating/cooling capacity. For the 3,000 sq. ft. home just mentioned, it would mean a rebate totaling $2,971.

Although wind, geothermal and outdoor furnace systems are more expensive than the typical $2000 wood pellet stove, they are very efficient and pay for themselves in only a few years.

The increasingly popular manufactured home is a growing segment of the suburban real estate market, and fire safety codes are very specific as to what you can use to heat your home.

Check with your local building department to find out exactly which alternative heating appliances are permitted before you start shopping for the best deal.

Rural Alternative Heating

Just as the sky and landscape open up in rural America, so do opportunities for alternative heating.

With so much room to work with you could design a CHP (Combined Heat and Power Unit).

An obvious choice for homeowners in the Corn Belt would be an outdoor corn furnace for heat and hot water. Couple this with a low maintenance wind turbine for electricity and it’s possible to achieve a 70% reduction in energy costs when compared to fuel oil.

If your property includes a shallow pond or lake, a closed loop geothermal system will heat and cool your home for the cost of electricity to operate a heat pump.

The choices for alternative heating are plentiful no matter where you live. It’s just a matter of knowing where you fit in.

To compliment your country style home décor design, you might want to think about the style of light fixtures together with the type. Most bedrooms can use a chandelier as well as lamps. Choosing A Garden Patio Design – 3 Factors To Consider

Category : Uncategorized

Garden patio designs may be as simple as a rectangular or square concrete space with chairs, tables and grills for barbecues. It could also be one that looks straight out of a storybook; with curtains and other additional trinkets all over the place.

Whatever your choice of design is, the most important thing to remember is that it needs to complement your home, the environment around it and your mood of course. Below are some more factors to consider when choosing a garden patio design.

1. Landscape.

Landscaping is one of the most important considerations in a garden patio design. The plants around the patio need to add fragrance, texture and color to the patio floor. They can help soften the hard surfaces and other non-living elements of the patio.

Adding light and water fixtures in the design is also another great idea if you plan on staying or entertaining in the patio during the night. Just imagine how magical it would look once the lights are turned on and the sound of running water can be heard in the background.

2. Surface.

There is no need to stick with one or two surface design. Try to experiment with other designs to see which ones will best suit your garden patio. Do not just opt for the ordinary bricks and clay. Put on other materials like tiles or pebbles.

The best thing about some of these materials is that they are not that expensive. You can actually create amazing designs once you put on your mind and creativity on it. The key is: planning. Plan carefully what elements you want to incorporate to your patio design beforehand so that you will know exactly what to buy, and where to place them.

3. Furniture.

After the landscape and surface are considered, the furniture you will have in your garden patio will make everything perfect. When thinking of furniture to have on your patio, keep in mind that they should be durable, stylish and of basic colors.

A good example is rattan or resin-coated furniture. The good thing about them is that you can dress them up depending on your choice. In addition, you can easily blend them in whatever theme you plan your garden patio to have.

May it be a themed party or the color of the flowers in your garden, you can do minor adjustments to these furniture so that they will blend well and complement the occasion or setting.

Category : Uncategorized

When you decide to remodel your bathroom, it can be a tough choice to decide what type of flooring you should use. You want it to look good, but you want it to be able to withstand the special circumstances that bathroom flooring has to deal with, like humidity and floors that can get pretty wet sometimes.

You don’t have to hesitate if you want to install wood for your bathroom flooring. When you practice a few precautionary measures, you can enjoy the warmth and beauty of wood for your bathroom flooring. When you notice the usual wear and tear of a wood floor, unlike many other types of flooring, you can refinish your floors to ensure they stay looking as beautiful as they did on the first day of installation.

Vinyl and ceramic tile have always been popular choices for bathroom flooring due to their ease of maintenance. Instead of traditional choices, you can opt for a modular carpet for your bathroom flooring. If you want to sink your feet into soft, warm carpeting when you emerge from the shower on a cold winter’s day, do your research and you will find plenty of carpeting options that can be perfect for your new bathroom flooring.

You can also choose from bamboo or cork. If you are a person who is concerned for the environment, one of these two choices may be just what you were searching for. They are a renewable resource that can offer qualities that are perfect for the bathroom environment. Both are resistant to mildew, mold and all kinds of bacteria that are lurking in your bathroom, and they will repel moisture naturally on the bathroom floor. This can help to avoid accidents from slipping on wet floors after bathing.

Glass tile as a bathroom flooring option can offer you a world of choices in texture, color and shapes. You can use them for backsplashes, countertops and walls too, so your bathroom can coordinate perfectly.
