Versatile Bedroom Furniture Chests

Category : Uncategorized

The chest of drawers has long been a staple piece of bedroom furniture all over the world. This functional piece adds much needed storage while also providing some display area for photos and trinkets and the like. Over the years, however, this piece has fallen into a bit of rut, design-wise. Boring, cookie-cutter dressers and chests with five or six equally sized drawers have become the norm, and are what most of us have in our bedrooms. There are alternatives to these ho-hum pieces of bedroom furniture that can add some style and flair while still serving the purpose of storage. Here are a few of them.

The lingerie chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers that is ideal for an additional storage piece or for those who only require minimal storage. This piece commonly has seven small drawers stacked one on another, the seven drawers representing the days of the week. While the lingerie chest was designed to store undergarments and such, it can serve many other purposes as well. With its slender, space-saving design, the lingerie chest is ideal for rooms with limited space, such as dorm rooms and smaller bedrooms.

Another option is the sometimes quirky mule chest. The mule chest has no standard set-up, really, but it is often defined by a small square storage area with a door instead of a drawer. This door area can be set in the middle of the piece or in one of the upper corners. This set-up leads to the piece having a few different sized drawers and gives it a bit of an antique or hand-crafted look. Mule chests are usually larger than standard chests and many can work in the living room as well as the bedroom.

Finally, a media cabinet may be what you need to organize your CDs and video games, or to store your television or computer. Like the mule chest, there is no set design for the media cabinet. Many are geared toward teens while some give you a stylish, sophisticated place to discreetly store electronics and accessories.

How to Choose Furniture for a Restaurant or Bar

Category : Uncategorized

Before you begin to think about how to furnish a new bar — or refurnish your old one — you should ask yourself one very important question: What are people going to do here?

It’s not as obvious as it seems. Sure, they’re going to buy drinks, schmooze, and hopefully keep coming back to invest in your kids’ college fund one mojito at a time. But what is the unique character of your bar? Are you a sports bar with a half a dozen flat screen televisions? Are you a traditional pub serving lunch and dinner? Or, are you in an urban arts district catering to a crowd stopping in for a drink before a night at the theater? Each of these is a very different business — and each has a different way of making money. It’s important to keep all of these factors in mind when thinking about how to furnish your establishment.

Let’s start with your bar’s entrance. If you are in an urban area or a college town, you’re probably going to need some kind of door control. You’ll likely employ a bouncer or two to check drivers’ licenses at the door. A great bar table and stool set at the establishment’s entrance not only reminds your employees that you care about their comfort, but it serves as a preview of what’s to come for potential patrons. Consider a simple bar table such as the Olympia Stainless Steel Bar Table. Combined with an appropriate bar-height stool, you offer your greeters and door managers a compact station from which to do business. The table offers a surface for managing door supplies — wristbands or hand-stamps, for instance, tickets, or a small cashbox for making change — and this particular model has a clever rack under the tabletop for hanging a bag or purse.

For seating, consider something along the lines of the Aluminum Bar Stool with Arms, appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use, or an adjustable-height stool. Door-management is an essential operational factor for many bars, and doing it wrong can cost you money — even your liquor license. It’s also how your customers will first interact with your business, so it’s worth doing right. An elegant pub table and matching stool sends the correct message.

Inside the bar, the furniture will be determined, in part, by what you are serving up with the drinks. Whether it is a hot plate of fish-n-chips, buffalo wings, potato skins or something a bit more high-class, the décor needs to match what is featured on the menu for a truly complete experience.

Unless you’re operating a ultra-traditional bar with limited space, chances are you’ll have at least two seating areas: one at the bar itself and the in a dining area with tables and dining chairs. If you’re a sports bar — or a corner pub where neighbors congregate to watch the big game — then you’ll want to make sure your seats are comfortable enough so your guests aren’t squirming at half-time. As much as we love the elegant lines of the Wave Back Barstool, a better choice for the sports-oriented venue might be a traditional, comfortable piece such as the Oak Frame Swivel Stool with Leather Seat and Back. Or, for a truly swanky touch, the cushy Overstuffed Arm Stool with Black Metal Base and Foot Ring adds the perfect touch. Upholstered seating surfaces in durable, professional-grade fabrics, leather, or leather-look vinyl invite your guests to have another round in comfort, while swivel stools invite conversation among the armchair quarterbacks.

Bridging the gap between upholstered seating and elegant modern furnishings are design classics such as that of the Double Chrome Ring Retro Style Frame Counter Stool. Both fresh and classic, it’s a comfortable combination of the traditional and the contemporary. And although it’ i a counter stool, there’s no reason to limit these stylish, versatile pieces to bar seating. Counter-height tables, from classics like the Poplar Pub Table with Cherry Finish and Walnut Inlay, to sophisticated modern expressions such as the Chrome Frame Bar Table with Glass Top offer seating alternatives that are comfortable for guests, easy on servers, and flexible enough to accommodate dozens of different decors. Whether your aesthetic is influenced by Studio 51 or NASCAR, there’s a bar stool that is exactly right for your business.

If your establishment is more food-oriented — or if you simply prefer the look of a traditional dining-room — then you might want to consider table-height seating away from the bar, rather than bar-height or counter-height seats. Nevertheless, there’s a good deal of flexibility here as well. From traditional workhorses such as the Solid Oak Pub Table Top with Iron Base to beautiful, formal options such as the Antique Appearance Dining/Game Table, there’s plenty to choose from.

Remember, it’s only in part a matter of style. Style matters, to be sure, but so does function and economy. If you’re a high-volume business selling pitchers of beer, you probably don’t want a barroom full of antiqued Queen Anne tables. You might, however, seriously consider a mix-and-match approach, mating solid, reliable table tops with an assortment of complementary bases. Separate tops and bases are easier to ship and store and provide an economical alternative for venues that need sturdy surfaces at great prices.

The secret is to shop around. From formal dining rooms to folding banquet tables, to solid oak or outdoor options in wicker and rattan, you’ll likely find great pieces designed for the rigors of commercial use that matches elegant style, for the host in you, with affordable prices, for the businessman in you.

Eating at Kitchen Islands

Islands can be used as additional eating area. This is easy to do by having the counter overhang the island by a foot or so. Add a few stools and you have an area for eating. This is a great place to read the paper with your morning coffee or provide extra seating for a large family or guests. Everyone can eat together in the kitchen.

A large island can accommodate both cooking and eating areas. This can be done by extending the counter on one end or on both ends, with the cooking area in the middle. Another option is to have a cooking area on one level and the eating area on another level of a multi level island.

Weather Radios-A Series on What They Are, Their Purpose, And the Types Available

Category : Uncategorized

The first series of these articles is intended to provide an understanding of what weather radios do. Essentially they are designed to give you information (watches and warnings) concerning the weather. However updated technology has allowed them to provide information such as hurricane warnings, terrorists alerts, and amber alerts (missing and kidnapped children and adults). The main purpose of a weather radio is to issue watches, warnings and special weather statements issued by the National Weather Service(NWS). The National Weather Service is the only agency that may issue watches and warnings. While we see these on local television or hear them on local radio stations they are issued by the NWS. Local TV stations cannot issue these warnings.

The system is set up with various weather service locations strategically stationed throughout the United States. They operate on seven frequencies. This is primarily so that practically everyone can receive the NWS on one of these frequencies virtually anywhere in the U.S. Each frequency or channel constantly broadcasts a forecast for that service area. However, in times of severe weather the station broadcasts an alert tone followed by pertinent information concerning existing weather conditions whether it be a tornado watch or warning or flash flood warning with actions to be taken by the public. These broadcasts may be heard on GMRS or two way radios, scanners, marine radios, or specially designed weather radios. The NWS has S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) that allows these alerts only to be heard in designated areas. You do not have to listen to alerts for all areas of your local service coverage area. This is accomplished by a series of FIPS codes (Federal Information Processing Standards) that assigns every state and county a specific code to program into their weather radio to receive alerts for their county and/or surrounding counties or all counties in the service area. These codes can be found on the internet or a link at the National Weather Service, or at www.btproducts.us or by performing an internet search for FIPS codes.

In summary weather radios provide a multitude of information from your local forecast to special warnings and alerts to protect you and your property from impending weather emergencies and natural disasters. It is very important to have access to this information during power outages, during the night, or during outdoor activities away from home. More information is provided at the National Weather Service webpage and on many other websites. The next article will provide information on how the weather alert system works followed by an article on picking a weather radio or finding a source for this information that meets each individuals needs.

Bird House Building

Category : Uncategorized

Birds are indeed one of the great add-ons to your garden or backyard. Constructing a bird house is a perfect way to fascinate or draw them in. Not all birds however prefer to nest in bird houses. They differ in particular in their dwelling tastes. Like us, these so named “cavity-dwellers” also have specifications in relation to the kind of the type of home ground they wish. There are just minor feature issues or measurements for the birds, but they are very essential in their living.

Generally, there are some guidelines to be followed in building bird houses.

1. Determining the species or family of the birds that usually visit your garden or backyard. In addition, identify also which are the burrow dwellers and the cavity dwellers. Some of the typical cavity dwellers are the chickadees, wrens, flickers and bluebirds. You can select one from them and think of nice bird
house you can build for that bird species. Don’t go overboard and build too many bird houses on your property. Birds are very territorial, you do not want to see squabbling birds fighting each other due to over crowding. Preferable to hear chirps of pleasure rather than anger.

2. Determine all the needed dimensions and other specifications of your selected bird. The dimensions expected are the following: entry hole, floor size, depth and height. Smaller birds such as chickadees and wrens should have 8 inches in depth and 4 x 4 floor dimensions. You can try getting more information about the specific birds and their required measurement and dimensions on the internet.

3. Now for the building material, we would suggest using untreated lumber or wood for your bird house. Apart from the imitating the natural environment of the birds, natural woods lessens the risks of overheating and toxic absorption. Processed woods for instance plywood contain formaldehyde, a
very damaging chemical compound to living things. These can lead to serious health dangers to your invited birds. Those lumbers that are categorized as “pressure-treated” have toxic chemicals and
can also poison the old and nesting birds. Using paint is definitely a no-no. Flaking paints might be mistaken as food and can be eaten by your birds. The only exception from normal paint is to use what is called milk paint, although the hardiness of milk paint is not recommended for exterior surfaces. Furthermore, plastics and metals are not also inappropriate in building avian houses since both are subject to heat damage.

4. Planning and blueprinting a plan for your bird friends is also very important Always be aware that the bird’s safety is one of your primary concern, so make sure that they will be protected from the predatory animals. It is also most beneficial to use sloping roofs so that the dirt, moisture and rain would not collect on top that may eventually cause rotting of the wood. It is also ideal to have extended roofs over the front and sides. Poles for roosting are good but not really essential particularly for cavity dwellers. Plus, consider also ventilation and drainage needs. You can make small holes in the floor to aid in the drainage of the rain water. Baby birds can be easily drown and a small amount of water collected can lead them to their demise. Enough holes should also be placed on the walls to let the air enter the house and keep the place comfortably cool. Erecting the shelter at the top of a pole to assure the safety of your birds from unwelcome guests such as raccoons and cats.

5. Cleanliness and maintenance of the birdhouse is also important. A messy and dirty nest can cause lots of illnesses for your birds. Including a back door will certainly assist in preserving the cleanliness of the bird house. Without a good deal of exertion, you can take out all those dirt like droppings and unused nests within the birdhouse. Therefore, spreading of disease can also be prevented. These tips for building your bird house should provide a base to build from. There is much more information available but I think you will agree that if you provide the shelter there is a very good chance that you will have some backyard companions that will give many moments of sheer pleasure.

Bathroom Ventilation and Ceiling Fans

Category : Uncategorized

Although a traditional ceiling fan (one with exterior blades) is not generally what a homeowner considers when looking for ventilation in the bathroom. A small, half-bath or even a small full bath is usually not an appropriate place to consider installing a traditional ceiling fan, however in more modern, larger deluxe homes with large “live-in” bathrooms, a ceiling fan can add both a functional as well as a decorative touch that makes this area even more elegant and comfortable.

To avoid possible confusion, a bathroom ceiling fan is not the same creature as the bathroom exhaust ceiling fan or ventilator although the terms may often be used interchangeably. Building codes in all the areas I can think of require bathrooms to have a means for directly ventilating hot, moist air to the outside. This can be accomplished by having either a window that can be opened in the bathroom or some type of electrical ventilating device that pulls the air from the bathroom and discharges it to the outside of the home via a vent.

Each type of external ventilation has its pros and cons. A window often provides a nice decorating touch as well as providing a source of natural light and outside air ventilation. However, a window doesn’t remove bathroom odors and moist, hot air very well under most circumstances and can’t generally be used during the colder months. If the window is of wood construction, you may also run the risk of it warping with the obvious negative results. Window units are also susceptible to mold and mildew (depending on the material used in their manufacture) and require some extra attention when it comes to cleaning. A mechanical ventilation system (that runs quietly) will effectively eliminate hot, moist air and bathroom odors year round. Because of the moist air drawn through them, frequent cleaning of the blades is advisable to avoid the build-up of debris, etc.

Hanging bathroom ceiling fans serve both functional and decorative purposes. Although they don’t remove (exhaust) odors, etc. they do provide a pleasing movement of air in an area that usually doesn’t include this simple luxury. Even bathrooms with good outside ventilation can be stuffy sometimes, particularly when you are spending time on the “throne” or when drying your hair or after taking a shower. Exhaust systems, whether mechanical or an outside window, take time to remove heat and moisture from the bathroom area and most of us want more or less instant relief when stepping out of the shower or when taking a long, soothing bath. The air circulated by the addition of a ceiling fan can keep that mirror steam-free and otherwise provide the added comfort that you will enjoy.

There are several important considerations to keep in mind when deciding on the type, style and size of a fan that will be used in this area. Many on-line or brick and mortar retail sources will include a category for ceiling fans which can make the selection process easier. A primary consideration is the actual size (length) of the blades. 3-blade models are very popular in bathrooms. These ceiling fans are available with smaller motors and shorter blades that limit the intensity of the air circulation. To be on the safe side, shop for a fan with a variable speed control that will allow you to adjust the air circulation to its most comfortable level.

Take into consideration the height of the bathroom ceiling. A good rule of thumb is to maintain at least 6 ½ to 7 feet of clearance from the bottom of the fan to the bathroom floor. If you have, for example, an 8-foot ceiling, a fan with a 3-inch down rod will be just about right, etc. For lower ceilings, “hugger” type ceiling fans are available from most manufacturers.

Avoid purchasing a ceiling fan with wooden blades or blades that are made of other natural material that tend to warp in damp or moist conditions. Keeping the blades at the same weight is a major factor in preventing a ceiling fan from getting out of balance and becoming noisy.

Bathroom ceiling fans generally need to be cleaned more often than ceiling fans in other rooms because the moist conditions under which they operate causes dust, dirt and other debris to accumulate more rapidly.

While some people use the bathroom for strictly functional purposes and are in and out rather quickly after completing their “business”, others use the bathroom as a place to relax and unwind after a long day of hard work. Adding a ceiling fan to this area can truly enhance its use and make the time you spend there a pleasant experience.

Some discount sources

Some of the best ways to get discounts on modern furniture include buying during clearance sales and holiday sales, buying second-hand furniture, and going directly to the manufacturers who can sell you furniture at factory prices. However, the best place to get low-priced modern furniture without having to go to stores and yard sales is the Internet. Caring For Fans Correctly

Category : Uncategorized

Fans are incredibly valuable products to have in your home. There are countless products on the market that incorporate the fan into them and, what’s more, there is an increased need for stand alone fans. No matter what type of product you have or are looking to purchase, spend a few minutes looking for the right quality and then, take care of it. A fan that is purchased with care can last you a long time when you care for it over the coarse of time.

In caring for a fan, consider these important qualifications.

1. Fans should be kept dust free. The more dust that accumulates on the blades, the harder the motor needs to work. In addition, the dust can get into the fan’s air suction and that too can lead to problems with the motor.

2. You should tighten the screws on fan blades every few months. Those fans that are used heavily will need more attention than those that do not. A blade that becomes loose not only will cause you to have to deal with the possibility of it falling but it will be louder, too.

3. Keep your fan oiled and working well. You should follow your owner’s manual to get more details about how to keep your fan working properly to this level. Most of what needs done only needs a few minutes of your attention every few months.

When you properly care for the fans in your home, the appliance just works better. The largest concern that you have is keeping them clean as a fan that is loaded with dust can through that dust onto you and throughout your home. It’s easy to care for a fan, though. Simply use some warm water with a touch of mild dish soap. Never get the motor wet, though!
