Cleaning Dryer Duct

Category : Uncategorized

One should learn a few quick tips about cleaning dryer ducts. Over a period of time, a thick layer of lint can get built up. This happens due to the hot air exhausted by the clothes dryer, as they blow lint and dust which gets stuck in the ductwork. It can even lead to a fire hazard. (This is the number 2 reason for house fires). Therefore, cleaning dryer ducts is a must for safety purposes. This should be done at least twice a year or more depending upon the usage.

There are two parts to this procedure; one is to clean out the filter and vacuum out where the filter goes. This should be done monthly. The second part is to have a professional company come out at least once a year and clean out the venting. This can be done when you have your ducts cleaned for a few more dollars.

Cleaning the dryer duct is an easy and affordable process. Those people having dust allergies should have this done by a professional. The professionals charge $90 to $150 depending on your residential area. One can always afford this price for cleaning dryer ducts rather than take the chance of the damage caused by a dryer duct fire.

Simple steps for cleaning dryer ducts can not only protect your home but also the people living in it. A simple process does not take long but serves the good in the long run.

Pictures Of Landscaping – Using Other Peoples Ideas To Design Your Landscape

Category : Uncategorized

One of the most common searches on my site is for pictures of landscaping. So I know that a lot of folks rely on photos of other peoples designs to get ideas. But at the same time, while I do have a large picture directory of other peoples projects on my site, the most common questions I receive are still related to specific shapes and design ideas.

It would seem that with as many pictures of landscaping there are to look at online, just about everyone could find a close match to their own property that could be copied. It would seem so…..if every yard was square or rectangular. However, the fact is that most yards aren’t square or rectangular. So even with the endless landscaping ideas and examples out there, it’s still highly unlikely that you’ll find an exact match to the shape of your property.

Don’t tell anyone… but even as a professional, I still use pictures of other peoples landscaping as an educational tool and to get new ideas. However, unlike most people, I don’t search for an exact idea to copy. I look for unique, creative, and new ideas and pieces of the puzzle.

Now here’s a piece of advice and the point to this entire article.

When looking at pictures of landscaping, pay attention to the details, ideas, and principles that are universal to most designs. Look for the things that are common and repeated often by different designers. These are the elements that look good because they are generally based on basic principles of art. These are the things that will probably incorporate well into your own design project regardless of shape.

Other peoples landscaping pictures are a great design tool to help you get your project done. However, instead of hopelessly searching for your exact layout, borrow several ideas from several different designs. You’ll save yourself a lot of frustration and have a much better chance of creating something unique to your own property.

Ergonomic Seating Options – Making the Right Choices

Category : Uncategorized

Ok, let’s get real here! Most of us sit for most of the time during the day. You sit when you eat your breakfast, you sit while you are driving, during a company meeting, at your office, during lunch and dinner and finally while you are watching television. If you are thinking that sitting requires less physical effort than standing or walking then think again—it puts a lot of stress on your lumbar area and can lead to a whole bunch of health problems.

The choice of an appropriate chair is a serious step in preventing health problems in individuals who work in a sitting position. When discussing the ergonomic approach, sitting is looked upon as a precise, specialized activity which is impacted by the way that a sitting person interrelates with the working surroundings. There are a few things you need to bear in mind when you purchase a chair:

You cannot go out and purchase one chair and expect it to fit everyone in the office. The individual’s body dimensions have to be taken into consideration when selecting the chair so that it does not strain one part of the body while fitting another. For example, a chair could be too high and the arm rests too far apart for a short, slim person. Once you narrow down a few chairs that fit your budget and the environment you are in, you should allow the person who will be using the chair the most to try the chairs in a real work situation. Make sure that the chair meets the needs of the worker and their job before the ultimate selection is made.

Take the time to jot down information about the user’s body height. The best possible seat height is about ¼ of the body weight. Of course, this may vary, as the torso-to-leg ratio may vary.

I wish I could tell you that one chair is appropriate for every activity—but that is not the case. For instance, if you are a doctor, then you would require a different chair then someone who worked as a computer operator.

It is also important to take into consideration what the company you are purchasing the chair from has in the way of a warranty. Some manufacturers will let you know what to inspect on a regular basis to avoid maintenance and repair costs.

One thing that I found when I was out in the field was that giving someone the correct ergonomic chair does not mean that your problems are solved. The benefits of using an ergonomic chair do not happen unless the person makes sitting properly in the chair a habit. It would behoove you to instruct the person on all the attributes of the chair and how to use it.

Here are some of the attributes you should be looking for:

1. The adjustability of the chair. Make sure that seat height is adjustable.

2. Seat height range. Make sure that the seat height can be adjusted to the height recommended for the individual and their job.

3. The backrest should be adjustable both vertically and in the frontward and backward direction. Additionally, make sure that when you sit down the lumbar is snug against your back.

4. The seat depth should be able to work for both the shortest and tallest users. Make sure that you have 2-4 fingers worth of space between your calves and the front edge of the seat.

5. The stability of the chair is critical and it should have a five-point base.

6. Armrests that have adjustable heights are optimal for computer operators and the depth would depend on the person and task. Some armrests can also be pushed out of the way so that you are not resting your forearms on them as you type.

7. Casters on a chair are more often the case, but wheels may not be needed when a stable work position is necessary. If casters are needed, make sure they are the type that match the flooring you have (carpet casters, hard floor casters, ect.)

8. To help make a new chair more beneficial, taking regular stretch breaks are almost mandatory. There are also several exercises that you can do during your stretches, so do your homework.

Ok, once you have picked your chair, adjust it so that your feet are flat on the floor, your forearms at a 90 degree angle, your head up and back straight. If, by chance, your legs are short or your workstation is too high, you will need to purchase an adjustable footrest.

Lastly, keep in mind that your chair is simply one of the factors to be reflected on in designing a workstation. The other elements, such as the work surface, document holders, task lighting have to be designed in as well.

Budget Decorating: Making A Room Divider

Category : Uncategorized

When you need to divide a space in your home but don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy room divider, you can always choose to think about making a room divider. Making a room divider is not that difficult after you decide which approach you want to take. There are several ways to go about this task and the more creative you are, the better your room will look in the end. Take a look at this fun and easy ideas to get a better understanding about what you should do with your own personal space and décor.

Blinds

One easy way to divide space is to use bamboo blinds. You can get these pretty cheap at your local general merchandise store. Simply hang them strait down from the ceiling to divide the space where you want to. You can put these almost anywhere and pull them up if you want to get rid of the divider temporarily.

Along those same lines, you can use curtains or fabric to divide a room. You can make them in a roman blind style that can be pulled up, or install a rod or track on the ceiling and then you can push the fabric out to divide the room and simply pull it back against the wall when you want the room open. You can use premade curtains, hanging beaded or bamboo curtains or make your own out of a fabric that matches other items in the room.

Shelves

Another way you can divide your personal space is with bookshelves. This is a little more expensive than using bamboo blinds, unless you already own bookshelves. However, they are a very sturdy way to divide a space well. In addition, they are not easily moved, so once you commit to using them as a divider, you won’t likely be able to move them around a lot. You can really use them as a wall, which is great for a studio type apartment or other big space.

If the back of your shelves are plain boring wood, you can spice them up with paint or wallpaper. Think about adding a mural or hand painted stencil to really give it some interest.

You might also think about using open shelving boxes to divide the room but still be able to see through to the other space. These can be bought in many colors and styles but can get to be a bit expensive.

Panel Dividers

You can make your own panel room dividers from wood, fabric or even odd materials like shutters. Perhaps the easiest way to make a room divider is to take 3 or more tall shutters and hinge them together. You can also make 3 or more frames out of wood and hinge those together – you can staple fabric to the frames for a soft look or put any other material inside. You could use wood, plywood that is painted or wallpapered, metal that is either plain or textured like the kind you use in tin ceilings or anything else – your only limit is your imagination!

Making a room divider is an easy way to help cut up a large space into smaller sections. It can make your home seem a little warmer and intimate, which is always a good thing. Just experiment with what you have or spend a little cash to get some things to work with until you get the look you want.

Recipes for Concrete and Hypertufa

Category : Uncategorized

This will not be THE list, but is a list of mixes that I use most. There are hundreds more and as you gain experience you will develop mixes of your own.

For ornamental concrete casting you can forget about the “standard” mixes. There is to much aggregate in them. You want a fine mix that will bring out detail.

Always mix the dry parts first, then add your water.

CONCRETE

Here are some to start you off…

I – This is the one I use the most.

1 – cement
3 – sand
Enough water to get a pourable mix. Like pancake mix.
You can change this to 2 parts sand if your mold has very fine detail. A better way is to try to get finer sand and stick with the 3 part mix.

II – for stepping stones, curbs, and anything that will be subject to heavy traffic use this:

1 – cement
2 – sand
3 – aggregate.
Enough water to get a heavy mix. This is the “standard” mix.
This should just barely pour. If you have to scoop it that is OK.

HYPERTUFA

I love this stuff…

My favorite mix is..

I-

1 – cement
1 – peat moss
1 – sand
Enough water to get a mix that you can pick up and form a ball with.

A couple of notes:

When buying peat, be sure it has no fertilizer added. Some does, and it will not cure properly.

I have found it best to soak the peat overnight.

II-

You can replace the peat with potting mix. Be sure there is no fertilizer. Potting mix has Perlite in it and makes an interesting textured surface.

III-

1 – cement
1 – Vermiculite
1 – sand
1 – peat
This is a real nice mix with an interesting surface when dry.

I have used wood shavings, paper out of the shredder, sawdust, and even lawn clippings.

Anything dry I always soak for at least 12 hours before using.

Get Rid Of Air Pollution In Your Home With House Plants

Category : Uncategorized

Do you know that formaldehyde, a colorless, pungent-smelling gas can cause severe health effects to us? Sources of formaldehyde are:-

environmental tobacco smoke and combustion sources (burning wood, kerosene and by automobiles)
preservatives in some paints, cosmetics and coating
finish used to coat paper products
pressed wood products and furniture made with these pressed wood products
certain insulation materials such as urea-formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) and fiberglass insulation
durable press drapes, other textiles, and glues.

Wow! Looking at the list, there must be plenty of formaldehyde in our homes! The scary part is formaldehyde can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing when exposed at elevated levels. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. Health effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation; wheezing and coughing; fatigue; skin rash; severe allergic reactions. High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma.

Since research shows that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, be sure to keep our homes well ventilated all the time. Besides that, try placing the following plants in your home:-

- Chrysanthemum
- Dracaena
- !vy
- Boston fern (Nephrolepsis Exaltata)
- Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens)
- Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum)
- English Ivy (Hedera Helix)

Apparently, NASA in 1973 has made an experiment to find a solution to maintain air quality inside confined spaces and the results show that the above plants are able to remove pollutants from the air. Since different plants absorb different pollutants, it will be a good idea to mix a minimum of two plants per 100 square feet of floor space. Of course, there are no harms in having more (not in bedroom though, you will need the oxygen at night!) as long as you know where to place them.

Chandelier Lamp Shades

Category : Uncategorized

There are robust-looking chandeliers in wrought iron, crystal chandeliers that are simply drop-dead gorgeous, and candle chandeliers that ooze romance. And lampshade chandeliers are dainty, pretty things. The chandelier frame is a pretty massive, with lampshades that are attached to the top. So it is obvious that this type of chandelier is meant for a large room.

The advantage of a lampshade chandelier is that a dazzling array of moods and designs may be created just by changing the shades. There is no need to dismantle the entire chandelier frame and revamp it. Also, a lampshade chandelier can be readily assembled at home.

In case of such chandeliers, the frame is usually a simple one, mostly made of wood or iron, since it is of no use to have an ornate frame that is going to be hidden by the overhanging shades. It is the type of lampshade being used that determines the look of the chandelier. The shade can be in the shape of the regular cone, a bell or circular like the Chinese-styled lampshades; it can be made of virtually anything ranging from handmade paper, silk, beads or a simple printed fabric. The lampshade may be in some sort of color, so that instead of a clear light you can have a light that diffuses a tinted glow. This can be your choice if you want mood lighting rather than incandescence.

The lampshade can be made to match the furnishings of the room so that in addition to a chandelier that is attuned to the mood of the room, you also have one that is color coordinated with the rest of the room. In fact, this is the only type of chandelier where you can coordinate so easily. When it comes to versatility, the lampshade chandelier is much more successful than other types of chandeliers.

Chair Casters

Category : Uncategorized

Did you know that employers in the United States spend more than seven billion dollars to compensate for work-related injuries, including cumulative trauma disorders arising from struggling with immobile workplace furniture? If you are such a business owner, then do not be alarmed – the simplest solutions often work. Adding chair casters to your office chairs may be all you need to do to lessen your employees’ stress and improve their productivity.

Smooth-wheeling chair casters can allow your employees to multitask without strain – they can go from working on the computer to answering the phone to sliding to their files with just a slight push, without ever getting up. Best of all, chair casters make it easier to pull in and out of a chair – your employees never have to lift the chair and risk pulling a muscle.

There are many kinds of casters, but the two most important distinctions are carpet casters and hard-flooring casters. Your choice should obviously depend on what type of flooring you have in your office.

Carpet casters are designed to roll on softer surfaces and do not wear out the carpeting as easily as casters designed for hard flooring do. Experts recommend that you use tread caster wheels with polyurethane crown for this purpose. The crowns on these types of casters allow optimum rolling on carpeted surfaces. These casters are also very good for swiveling, because they rotate much more easily than flat-tread wheels. If you are looking for casters made for hard flooring, on the other hand, one of your best bets would be caster wheels made with phenolic resin. These casters glide perfectly on flat concrete and even on hardwood flooring.

There are many chair caster vendors over the Internet who are willing to give you substantial discounts if you buy in bulk. Some office supply manufacturers also sell chair casters. You can likewise have casters built into your office chairs even before you buy them. Make sure that the casters are securely placed but are at the same time easy to remove for easier replacement.
