Tips on Being Safe Inside and Outside Your Home – Part 1

Many people do not understand why they may be a target for home invasion. How could anyone think of breaking into my home or hurting me–I am a nice person–I pay my bills on time and I obey the law. Remember, burglars do not care. They are out to get whatever it is you have that provides an interest to them. If your home has any of these problems, you may want to consider changing the way you do some things.

There are several simple things you can do to make it so burglars will not want to attempt breaking into your home. These tips are provided as a reference point–not to be confused with some things that will definitely keep burglars out. If a burglar wants in your home–he or she will get there.

1. We all like privacy, but are those hedges and trees doing anything but making your yard look messy? Keep your plants, trees and hedges trimmed nicely so your home can be seen by your neighbors and anyone passing by your home, especially the police when they are out driving the streets of your town or city.

2. Outside lighting is great to use. Make sure that all areas around your home are brightly lit, especially the entrances. Many homeowners are now investing in motion activated lights to place in various locations that would provide access to their homes.

3. Try using extended length deadbolts. These are longer than the customary deadbolts and go into the framing of your door. They make it harder to break down the door. Do make sure your door frame is sturdy.

4. Avoid hiding your most valuable possession–your house keys–in obvious spots around your house and yard. If you must have a key available outside, let a trusted neighbor or friend keep one for you. If you lose your keys you will still have access to your home. Then you must change your locks as soon as possible.

5. You can brace your patio doors with a sawed off broom handle or a metal rod. This will prevent entry other than actually breaking the sliding glass doors. This may also be applied to sliding window frames.

6. If you have decided to buy a burglar alarm make sure you buy it from a trusted source. Put up signs and window stickers that say you have a home alarm. Make sure all windows have locks that work. Noisy pets also make a great deterrent.

7. You may also consider placing individual motion detecting alarms and other self-defense products around your home. Put the self-defense products you would use in places that are readily accessible. You may want to get to them quickly.

Home safety and defense is primarily common sense. When you cannot do some of the things suggested, you may take other measures to protect your valuables and yourself–remember to always remain within the law. The next article will present different ideas for home safety and defense.

Easy Concrete Pavers

Category : Uncategorized

Lets walk through the process.

1 – Buy or make a mold. 3 or 4 would be better, you will finish quickly and not loose momentum.

2 – Estimate the amount of concrete you will have to mix to fill the mold. I fill the mold with water and pour it into a 2 liter container to do this. You can use sand if your form will not hold water.

3 – Set up your mold so that it will be level and secure when you pour.

4 – Coat the inside of the mold with release agent. This is a trick way of saying oil. I use 10w engine oil. Buy the cheapest you can get. Don’t use to much. If it puddles you may get pitting on the surface of your paver.

5 – Mix your concrete. I would use a 1 – of cement, 2 – of sand, 3 – of 1/2″ aggregate mix for this. This is called a 1 2 3 mix, and is the mix most often used for these types of jobs.

Another way would be to buy redi-mixed concrete, but if you need a lot of these that would be expensive.

You should your concrete mix heavy enough that it will just pour. If you have to help it out of the container that is ok. You do not want a pourable mix like you would use for making decorative castings.

6- Dump the concrete into the mold and Wait at least 48 hours. De mold and place in a cool area to cure for another week. Keep the casting damp during this time. At the end of the week the paver can be set out to dry and use.

7 – Start to build your pathway! Brag to your friends about how you made the paving stones yourself!

The Facts About DLP VS Plasma TVs

Category : Uncategorized

With advancing technology revolutionizing the television viewing field, consumers have more choices than ever before. And as is often the case with electronics, it can be confusing. Terms and acronyms are used in the electronics industry that you just don’t find anywhere else, and if you aren’t careful it can keep you from buying newer technology simply because you don’t understand it well. That can certainly be the case with modern TV monitors.

The old analog TV sets of yesteryear did not have to have a very advanced monitor because the TV signal was only so good anyway, So CRT monitors lasted as the screen choice for decades. But now with HDTV moving the entire viewing experience forward in dramatic fashion, better ways of producing the on-screen image is in full production.

Two of those competing screen technologies are plasma TVs and DLPs (digital light processing TVs). Both types of screen technologies have been around for a while, although DLPs have only become commonplace in recent years. They use completely different means of displaying a TV picture and so each has it’s own peculiarities, both for good and bad. So you as the consumer need to weigh the differences and determine which will best fit your own needs.

Plasma TVs are well-known for their high contrast images and vivid colors, and they are generally cheaper than DLP TVs in the larger screen sizes. They have a wide viewing angle, and would make an excellent choice for many people. The drawbacks include less longevity and faster wear rate at higher altitudes above 6,000 to 7,000 feet, and the fact that they tend to run hot and need internal fans to cool them down that can sometimes be noisy depending on the model that you choose. They also can suffer from screen burn-in when an image is left on the screen for a very long time, producing a faint ghost image even when viewing something else.

DLP TVs are are capable of painting the screen with high contrast, color dense images too, although the nod still has to go to plasma TVs in general in this area. They are also easily used as a monitor for almost any digital video source that you have, including your computer. They use a reflective technology to display the screen image and so their picture is very bright and easy to see even in brightly lit rooms. However, they must be viewed at eye level, since the brightness falls off rapidly as you view them from either above or below eye level. The DLP will last almost indefinitely, but the light source must be replaced every 10,000 hours and that will cost over $200 when you do.

Actually either will make a fine choice to use with today’s emerging television technologies. Just be aware that each has it’s own drawbacks, so choose the monitor that will fit your own particular needs and uses best.

Which Coffee Maker? Grinding Out the Answer

Category : Uncategorized

When you stop at the convenience store or at a local coffee shop for your morning cup of coffee have you ever wondered how your cup of coffee came about? No, not how it was brewed but how it was that you are able to drink a cup of coffee. Sure, the coffee machine plays an important role in making your perfectly brewed cup of coffee, but just how did that coffee maker first come about, or how did the first person who ever sipped the first cup of coffee discover its magic?

Legend goes back to a lonely sheep herder in Ethiopia who noticed his sheep acting strangely every time they ate certain red berries from a certain bush. One has to wonder why he himself decided to give the berries a try. Well that is of no consequence because since that life altering decision man has been enjoying coffee in many different cultures, different countries and different places. Do you know they even drink coffee on the Space Shuttle? I wonder what kind of coffee machine they have.

The one million dollar question is exactly what makes a good cup of coffee? Does buying one of the best coffee makers lead to a great cup of coffee? Not necessarily.. Start with great coffee beans. You can even roast your own coffee beans with the Home coffee roaster machines. Roasting machines allow coffee drinkers to buy premium coffee beans at discount prices and roast them at home. The coffee drinker is in charge of the roasting level; medium or dark roast. Coffee drinkers also advise against buying pre-ground coffee, pre-grinding diminishes the coffee flavor and aroma. Apparently the best part of the coffee bean is found deep within it therefore pre-ground, once the package is opened loses that rich coffee aroma. Grinding your beans before you start percolating your coffee ensures you get the most out of the bean. Talking about grinding the beans there are also two types of coffee grinders; burr and blade grinders, both serve the purpose equally well, so the type of grinder you have does not affect your cup of coffee.

Shopping for coffee makers

There are three different types of coffee makers. There are filter coffee makers that basically drip hot boiling water over the ground coffee beans then filter the coffee over a disposable paper filter. Then there are the espresso/cappuccino coffee makers and finally the combination coffee makers that make both cappuccino and filter coffee. Choose a coffee machine that suits your needs. Take into consideration how much and how often you drink coffee. How much you are willing to spend on seeking the perfect cup of coffee. Remember to look online, you can find many discount coffee makers.

Whether you enjoy your coffee with or without cream or whether you enjoy a robust and flavorful cup of black coffee remember to thank that lowly sheep herder who took a risk and ate the first coffee bean.

Have You Got A Leaky Skylight?

Category : Uncategorized

Why have I got a leaky skylight?

A skylight is an excellent source of both warmth and light for your home and they can enhance the overall appearance of your house as well as giving you a little extra air when required. There are a number of different factors that can lead to a leaky skylight but the most common factor is an improperly fitted or installed skylight. This inadequacy is usually brought about because having a skylight fitted by a professional roofing contractor can cost a lot of money, and people tend to revert to a handyman or, often worse still, doing it themselves. Without proper knowledge of construction regarding the skylight fitting and the roof surrounding it, though, can lead to disastrous results. Even the inadequate fixing of an existing leaky skylight can make things worse.

Use Roofer911 to fix your leaky skylight.

Roofing contractors tend to charge quite a high cost to fit a skylight because they would rather work on better paid, roof installments. That doesn’t mean you can’t find a reputable and highly skilled roofing contractor who will complete the job at a reasonable price. However, because fitting a skylight is a skilled job, as is all roofing, you will need to pay more to have one fitted properly by an expert when compare to paying a handy man to fit it.

Why is my skylight leaking?

The slightest hole, crack or blemish on the skylight, the panels surrounding the skylight or the roof can lead to a leaky skylight so it is important that whoever is fitting your skylight has a good knowledge of all these factors. Of course age, extreme conditions and accidents can also be the cause of your leaky skylight and it is important that you employ an experience and knowledgeable professional to repair the leak as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the skylight, the roof and the inside of the house.

Condensation.

Bear in mind that if you have drip on the inside of your skylight it does not necessarily mean you have a leaky skylight and condensation can often be the cause of sleepless nights and panicking homeowners. This is especially true in extreme conditions. Dryers, washing machines, hot baths and even the occupants of the home can cause condensation to build up on the inside of your skylight and this will inevitably drip off giving the impression that you have a leaky skylight. This becomes even more pertinent when the weather gets colder outside. A build up of ice or snow on the outside of your skylight is a sure fire way to promote condensation on the inside of your skylight and even a small crack means that this condensation can be in between the two panes of glass if you have double glazing.

The damage a leaky skylight can cause.

A leaky skylight causes relatively minimal damage in the short term, however over the long term this damage can become significant so you should make sure that the drops you saw coming off your skylight are actually condensation and not the first tell tale signs of a leak. You may end up having to replace wallpaper, carpets and worse still making structural repairs to the inside of your house (although only usually in extreme circumstances). A leaky skylight may also be indicative that you have bigger problems with your roof so you should get someone out to check it as soon as possible.

Lamp Shades Decorate a Room

Category : Uncategorized

When redecorating a room, don’t forget about your lighting. While it may seem that you will have to purchase all new lamps for your new décor, sometimes all you need is a new lampshade. Replacing a lampshade is a lot cheaper than purchasing a whole new lamp.

I find it is easier to wait until your major room components are in place before
selecting new lampshades. Let the theme of your new room eveolve, then select
lamp shades that either compliment or contrast with your theme. For example, a
wild safari room with a zebra rug on the floor, might be well-served by a simple
solid-color lamp shade to help offset the boldness of the rug. However, in a less
wild décor, such as a simple, clean, contemporary design, a bold lampshade would
add visual interest to the room. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Lampshades come in a variety of different shapes, textures, and materials. These
are your grandmother’s lampshades! Materials can range from paper, to fabric, to
natural materials like tree leaves, to fur, to plastic. And designs can range from sold
colors, to patterns, to abstract designs.

Before you head out to your lampshade store or place your order online for a
replacement shade, be sure to take a look at your current lampshade. Lampshades
come in a variety of different sizes (usually measured around the circumference of
the shade) and mounting styles. Some shades mount directly to the base lamps
while others mount to a support bracket that surrounds the bulb, while others still
clip directly onto the light bulb.

Be brave and daring with your choice of lampshades. They are easy to replace if you
hate your choice, but a simple lampshade can add that punch of drama to a room.
