Category : Uncategorized

Patio heaters may not be on the list of things to buy if you live in warm weather regions of the country, but for those who go through the cold temperatures of winter, they are a must. By installing an outdoor patio heater, you and your family can enjoy those nice winter days outside, instead of being couped up indoors all season.

You can get patio heaters in all different styles and power sources. One thing to keep in mind is to not buy a unit that is cheap looking or doesn’t have sufficient power to warm your area.

One decision you’ll need to make is whether you want a patio heater that will be installed permanently, or one that is portable? It’s a personal decision, but if you elect to have a permanent model, be sure to also put a cover over it during the summer.

New heaters will all be engineered with these types of safety standards, but used models may not, so be careful and check the unit out.

Quilt Pattern

Category : Uncategorized

From keeping our beds warm to adorning our walls and adding color to our living rooms, quilts have made our lives brighter and more cheerful. These beautiful hand-woven beddings are composed of a quilt top, a layer of cotton batting and a layer of fabric for batting. This is the most common method of quilting.

Quilts have held great cultural and historical significance over several hundred years. What started as a hobby for thrifty peasant women who put scraps of material and worn out clothing to design these beddings, soon developed into a large-scale industry. Various methods and patterns were employed in the making of quilts, each with its own unique style and beauty.

There is a dizzying array of quilt patterns in use today. Each pattern has its own individual significance and beauty. There are three main methods of creating a quilt top. Piercing or patchwork is the most popular method employed. In this method, small geometric or curved pieces of cloth are sewn together to form blocks. Embroidered quilts are popular when the design involves creating specific images. Embroidery can either be handmade or machine-made. Appliqué is the third method used in which various shapes are sewn to the surface of a block.

Although there are several hundreds of patterns in use today, some of them have stood out over the years, ever since the American Revolutionary War. One such pattern is the double wedding ring, which comprises of a familiar series of interlocking circles. The log cabin pattern is a series of blocks, with rectangular strips of fabric sewn at right angles to each other to form squares. Other widely used patterns include, Sunburst, Sawtooth, Bear’s Paw and flowers and leaves formed by sewing together, octagonal pieces of cloth.

The influence of this age-old quilt patterns still lives on. Although several modifications and variations have been made to the patterns, the true essence of the quilt lives on.

Basic Lawn Care Equipment For Your Best Lawn Ever!

Category : Uncategorized

If you want the best looking lawn, or even just one that is good enough to look out on as you enjoy a beautiful day, you will need to put some effort in. To minimize that, mechanization could be your answer!

There are some great time-saving tools around these days, that will take the chore out of your lawn as well as getting you sitting out on it enjoying it just as soon as possible! Even if you spend laborious hours on it, it’s still possible that it won’t end up perfect, but it will look way better.

Many people begrudge the effort and time it takes. Maybe it’s these very same people who also feel aggrieved that lawn care equipment can be a bit heavy on the pocket. Like all things in life, it can be hard to get a balance between what is a reasonable expenditure and whether it is worth it in the first place – ‘What’s in it for me?’, in this investment I make!

By buying reasonable lawn care equipment, you will have every opportunity to have a beautiful lawn, if that’s what you are seeking.

So, here are some of the most important implements that will help you get the lawn you really want.

Your Lawnmower – The Most Valuable Time-Saving Power-Tool

To spend your rest time cutting a lawn laboriously, is pretty much agreed by gardeners across all spectrums as a bit of a waste of time and effort. There must be better things to do than cut a lawn without proper lawn care equipment. Only the greatest purists who nurture and worship their lawn will resist buying a pretty good lawnmower as their most vital bit of lawn care equipment

There are two ways to do this, the hard way and the easy way. The hard way is a bog-standard mower that you push along without any motorization at all, but if you want to properly care for your lawn, you’ll need a decent mower that you can use without too much effort.

Of all the lawn care equipment that’s out there, the mower is the one that you’ll get most use of and, if you choose correctly, it will be the one that makes the most impact on your lawn and saves you the most time.

If you are in doubt about which type of mower you might buy, just take a look at the lawn and areas involved. For a large, very flat lawn, you will need a powered mower, probably a sit-on one. For a small lawn, get yourself one that will cut just right for that lawn. Unless it’s to massage your ego, you don’t need a sit-on mower for a lawn the size of a postage stamp!

With lawn mowers, there are plenty of different types to be found. For a reasonable choice that isn’t too expensive, go for a pushmower, without the push. That is the self-propelled mower that is power-assisted – just helping you out when you need it and giving you the flexibility of complete control..

Edge Trimmers – Go On Then, Finish The Job

When you’ve done your mowing, the job isn’t complete until you’ve gone round the edge too. In fact a well mown lawn will still look scruffy if your edges don’t get done.

A good trimmer will be one item of lawn care equipment that will ‘ice the cake’ and if used wisely, will enhance even the best mown garden, creating a look of quality that is hard to surpass.

This is one piece of garden equipment where mechanization can be harder to handle that doing it by hand, but with a twist. A good edge trimmer will be used manually, but will not only be very effective, it will also save you time and your back!

Yes, you can get those electrical or petrol/gas powered ’strimmer’ type edge trimmers when you’re out buying your lawn care equipment, but for me, there is no better piece of kit than the odd looking shear type that you use with a sideways shuffle along your border. The trouble with strimmers is that they run so fast that it can be hard to control them.

Go for a good manual!

Like a Gentle Rain From Lawn Sprinkler Heaven

Last up in the key lawn care equipment that you will need to consider seriously when you are aiming for a great looking lawn, is a way to get it wet!

Having an effective sprinkler system in place will make a huge difference when you are looking at hot, thirsty summers. Could you imagine watering your whole lawn with a watering can?

No, I thought not.

Sprinklers come in a number of different arrangements. Some, which might be best of you want as little involvement as possible, will be built into your lawn and come on with a timer system, popping-up without warning – so watch out!

For a small lawn, at the other end of the spectrum, are simple movable sprinklers that you attach your hose to and move around. Takes your time and effort, but for a small lawn that might be a completely acceptable solution.

Whatever you decide on, make sure that before you buy, you understand what it is you want and then double-check that it will meet your expectations. Coverage, water volume, cost and time-saving are all worth covering before your trip to the garden center.

If you get yourself these three pieces of lawn care equipment to deal with these key lawn maintenance issues, you will really have sorted out most of the problems you might find.

Use these as well as you can and, before you know it, you will be sitting out there, cool drink in hand, admiring a beautiful lawn, produced, by you, with minimal effort!

Handy Tips Concerning Rustic Log Beds

Category : Uncategorized

The primary goal of this article is to provide insightful information to help you make a calculated and wise decision regarding which beds would work best for your rustic-themed bedroom’s requirements and needs. After all it’s the furniture that sets the tone and dynamics of a beautiful room, and rustic log beds are one such attribute.

When considering rustic log beds it should be stressed that price is not always the determining factor between quality and mediocrity. Due to the nature of and materials used in the making of rustic furniture, you can often find beautiful pieces at bargain prices. While it’s true that you often “get what you pay for,” rustic furniture allows for more exceptions to that rule… so shop around!

Another handy tip for the price conscious is: buy used! Rustic furniture is often more study than their contemporary counterparts, so when treated properly a rustic piece can easily last generations.

Before moving on I do want to quickly mention that commitment to quality should never come second to anything in the log furniture industry. While it’s great to save a dollar here or there, if you spend the time and money to select the right piece at the start it can serve you well throughout the rest of your life. Rustic log beds are no exception.

While purchasing a rustic log bed you should look for innovativeness in their designs to match your individual tastes. One misconception among many people is that all rustic log furniture looks the same; this misconception couldn’t be further from the truth!

Rustic log beds are crafted from a variety of woods such as cedar, lodgepole pine, Douglas fir logs, etc. Each wood possesses a distinctive appearance, grain and atmosphere, so just the materials alone present a diverse realm of possibilities for your bedroom. In today’s growing market for designer and cool rustic log beds, the styles these beds are offered in also differ significantly, ranging from classic log bed designs to wild custom log bed designs.

There are obvious reasons as to why these rustic log beds are becoming more and more popular among people and individuals. A good deal of us desires a home that radiates warmth with a natural elegance. We want a home evocative of prior times; one that brings forth the charm of days past, but still keeps with the style of the modern day. Rustic log beds merge the past with the present perfectly, lending warmth without looking entirely out of place in a modern setting.

Rustic cedar and pine beds can be ordered in natural unfinished wood or can be completely finished with colored stain to match most any interior design. Hence it can be said that with a keen understanding of quality and design, coupled with knowledge of the fair prices of log furniture, rustic log beds can accommodate nearly any individual’s home to give it the perfect look and feel of the past and the present all collaged into one room!

Breaking Into the Housing Market

Category : Uncategorized

First time home owners are not the only people breaking into the housing market. Housebreakers of a different kind are capitalizing on the security shortcomings of home owners to make their mark on crime.

The ever-growing fault list of homeowners is paving the way for a lucrative career on the dark side. Thieves are in their element, especially when compliant homeowners make it easy for them to execute their offence.

What is it about locking sliding doors and windows that sends people into the defiant “I’m not going to be a prisoner in my own home” mode? The flip side of this rational is, “Let’s leave windows and sliding doors open slightly but make sure they’re secured to keep the criminal element out!”

The modern day thief thinks of a neighborhood as a warehouse of sorts with inventories offering a wide array of merchandise from jewelry to big screen televisions. Don’t get caught up in the, “It will never happen to me” mindset.

You only have to turn on the local news to discover the effects of this type of thinking. Local victims depicting in great detail the horrors of waking up and discovering a prowler in the throws of executing their brazen crime.

Stick with the broadcast long enough and you’ll inevitably find out the intruder entered through an open door or window. Break and enters are serious business and we as home owners need to deal with the situation in a serious manor.

Glass bubbles don’t exist in today’s world where crime is on the increase. Our police departments are doing their best with the resources they have. The rest is up to us to help keep crime stats down.

Crime prevention starts in the home, so set up family meetings and address the importance of good home security. The basis is working with what you have. I’m not suggesting you purchase hundreds of dollars worth of home security products right away. But if you have locks on your doors and windows, use them! A lock is a terrible thing to waste, especially when it’s the only thing preventing you from becoming another crime statistic.

I’m always amazed how many people leave their window coverings open at night. Take the opportunity away from opportunists by closing your blinds at dusk. Giving burglars a street view of your personal inventory doesn’t make sense.

Purchase one or two light timers and alter the times to come on and off at various times of the evening, even when at home. Giving the illusion of movement in your home is a great way to thwart intruders.

If you’re one of those people who don’t leave exterior lights on at night, take heed, exterior lighting should make an appearance once in a while during the night. Remember light timers are not just used to give the illusion of occupancy, a smart homeowner will use them to simulate several residents living in the home.

Home security is essentially about common sense. If we execute common sense ideas we are almost certain to prevent the “bad guys” from breaking into the housing market!

Safety at home while vacationing

Keeping the “bad guys’ away while on vacation involves more common sense than expense. Maintaining living habits on the home front while away is crucial if you want to keep burglars’ at bay.

Lighting habits are very important. Although it is not necessary to keep a light on in every room of your home, keeping lights on in the rooms that your family usually occupies is a must. Set up a light timer (available at major hardware stores).

If you have outside motion lighting, make sure it is installed high enough so that the bulbs can’t be unscrewed. Doors and windows should be properly secured before leaving on vacation. This includes basement windows, garage windows and even screen doors.

All exterior doors (including the inside garage door) should have deadbolt locks with one-inch throws and reinforced strike plates (the part on the frame that excepts the bolt). Don’t forget to secure sliding glass doors and windows with auxiliary locks or a piece of wood in the track to prevent an intruder from forcing the door or window open. Install 2″ screws in the top track to prevent a thief from lifting the door or window completely out of the track.

Make sure you unplug the electric overhead door opener. This will disable the unit and prevent anyone tampering with the frequencies to gain entry. If you have a manual overhead garage door make sure you wedge 2×4’s between the top of the door and the ceiling of the garage, so it can’t be opened from the outside.

If you trust your neighbors, let them know the dates when you’ll be away and leave them a number where you can be reached in case of emergency. Notifying all your neighbors is not necessary, one or two will do. Leaving a key with a trusted neighbor, relative or even a friend might be an option. Make certain whoever has access to your home will know what to do in case of an emergency.

Have this trusted person pick up your mail and newspapers daily. Do not suspend mail and newspaper deliveries as a “bad guy” might pick up on the interruption of service. It’s important to also have a friend maintain the watering of the garden and the cutting of the lawns.

Before leaving on that much needed vacation make sure you leave your blinds or curtains partially open. Call forward your home phone to a cell phone or another family member’s residence. Turn phone ringer down to low or off.

Trim Shrubbery near your home entrance and walkways. Have your neighbor park their car in your driveway from time to time to make it look like someone’s home. Hide your garbage cans in the garage or basement. On garbage day, have your neighbor put their garbage out on your property for pick-up.

Lock up any ladders, tools or other objects that can aid in a break-in. And why not display a “Beware of Dog” sign or Alarm company sign on your property. It goes without saying if you have an alarm system, you should test the system and make sure your home is armed before leaving on vacation.

Check with your home insurance company and review your policy obligations before leaving on vacation and don’t forget to take a home video of all your home furnishings and valuables and keep it off premises.

Finding the Right Window Coverings

Category : Uncategorized

You cannot stand it. The same old dreary windows that do little to add life to your home. It is time for a change. But, where do you start? How do you keep from making an expensive or embarrassing mistake? In fact, how can you know what you really want?

Here are some tips to help you begin your window coverings makeover.

1.Start with one room at a time. There may be the temptation, especially when moving into a new home, to decorate all of the rooms at once. This takes far too much energy and can sap your creative juices, leaving the decorating flat and less interesting. It can also make decorating your home an overwhelming task. Go slow. Do one room at a time and then move on to the next one.

2.Assess, review your needs. With pen and paper in hand, jot down some notes about all of the windows in the room. Measure them and note their size and shape. Rough sketches will help. Are the windows too large? Too small? Odd sizes? Mismatched sizes? Is there too much light in the room? Not enough light? Do you want to block an unattractive view? Do you want to enjoy the beautiful view? Do you need privacy? Daytime privacy? Nighttime privacy? Or both? Do you want to liven up a dreary room? How do other family members feel about these needs? What is your budget for the windows?

3.Look for help, tips and ideas. Seek inspiration. One thing is for certain, no matter what the challenge or situation that you are facing with your windows, someone else has already dealt with the same situation. There is a way, or many ways, to attractively treat the windows in your room. You can find examples of how others have decorated their windows in magazines, window decorating books, window decorating websites and by talking with friends and relatives.

4.Make a plan. Using your list of needs, rank the needs in order of importance and then make a plan that addresses your needs in that order. There is a way to treat issue.

5.Address your window coverings in stages. This is especially if you are uncertain about your preferences or if you are working on a budget. Begin with the shades, silhouette blinds or shutters. Once these are selected and installed, move to curtains-drapes-coverings.com/swags.html swags or kitchen curtains, including the traverse or wrought iron curtain rods. Finally, add the finishing touches such as cornices, decorative tie backs and finishing drapery hardware.

6.Combine and contrast colors. Using color in your window treatment is an excellent way to put life and energy as well as set the tone and mood of a room. Experiment with mixing colors from opposite ends of the color spectrum.

7.Mix fabrics for texture. Fabric is composed of either natural or synthetic fibers and how they are woven, knitted or felted together. The type fiber and the weave or knitting will determine the texture of the material or fabric. Mixing fabrics and textures can be an excellent way to create interest and set the tone of your window treatments. For example, you may consider using velvet over organdy or silk over linen. Common fabrics for window treatments include brocade, cambric, canvas, chintz, cotton duck, crewel, damask, gingham, lace, linen, muslin, organdy, satin, silk, taffeta and velvet.

8.Mix patterns. Mixing patterns can also liven up and set the mood for a room. Here are some tips for mixing patterns.

a.Match the scale, of the pattern to the area where it is going to be used. For example, use larger patterns on the drapes or shower curtains, medium patterns on valances or cornices and small patterns on accent pieces.

b.Use geometric patterns with one another. For example, you can use stripes with checks, plaids or dots.
c.Common colors in mixed patterns tie the two together. For example, blue stripes mixed with matching blue dots will tie the two patterns together.

9.Make small windows big. Make big windows smaller. One of your goals should be to make the room harmonious. Mismatched windows or windows of dissimilar size and shape can disrupt this harmony. You can make small windows appear larger by placing a heading such as a valance or cornice on the wall above the window and using curtains or drapes of similar length. Large windows can be treated with a series of blinds or drapes breaking up the expanse. Large cathedral windows can be treated by installing a traverse or curtain rods on the lower part of the window and leaving the upper portion untreated.

10.Let your window coverings evolve. Like a garden, the interior decoration of your home, including window treatments will be subject to change. Let your windows evolve as the interior of your home changes to reflect changes in your lifestyle or tastes. The first order for your windows is to provide privacy and light control. This will be accomplished with shades, blinds, miniblinds or shutters. Then you can begin creating mood with decorative treatments of color, design and texture. As you gain confidence and experience with decorating, you can change and expand your window treatments.

If you are tired of the same old boring drapery and country curtains, now is the time to make a change. Follow these steps. Look for tips and ideas in books, magazines and websites. You are on your way to a complete window make over.

An Egyptian Cotton Sheet is King

Category : Uncategorized

An Egyptian cotton sheet is a must have in your linen closet collection! Why, you ask? The answer is straightforward: Egyptian sheets are a cut above other sheets.

You almost have to be an engineer to buy bed sheets today. It’s not enough to simply choose from among twin, queen or king. Sheets are available in a huge variety of fabrics, including cottons, percale, jersey, flannel, sateen, silk and linen. Many of the sheet sets these days are cotton. An Egyptian cotton sheet is considered to be among the best, because when the cotton is spun, it produces the longest and strongest fibers. An Egyptian sheet made from Egyptian cotton is also more absorbent than other cotton yarns, a useful trait because the fabric acts as a wick and removes perspiration from your body, making you feel drier and cooler.

One of the things that set fine European bedding apart from the expensive designer sheets you might find in department stores is the quality of the cotton. True luxury sheets are more likely to use Egyptian cotton, which has the longest fiber in the world.

What is Egyptian cotton?
Martha Stewart claims the right to obsess about her Egyptian cotton Sheet. It’s the strongest and most luxurious cotton available. It produces a longer fiber that is softer, stronger and more absorbent than other cotton yarns. It’s found in better-quality sheets and towels and in ultra-fine dress shirts.

The cotton grown in the Egyptian Nile delta of is some of the finest cotton grown anywhere in the world.
When expertly woven, these long delicate fibers produce a soft yet strong thread. High-grade Egyptian cotton is considered to be the best performing and most luxurious fiber for bed linens. The small diameter of this fiber is what provides the silky, luxurious feel Egyptian cotton is known for.

An Egyptian cotton sheet has been advertised as presenting a thread count as high as 1500. Although a high thread count is wonderful, it seems that after 400 there is very little noticeable difference except for the price.

Differences in an Egyptian Cotton Sheet
Although Egyptian cotton is ranked to be highest in the world, not all Egyptian cotton is the same. It can vary in grades, fiber lengths, ply (the number of threads twisted together) and its weave. Be aware that quality can also differ greatly with manufacturers. To ensure you are buying high-quality linens look for a high-quality Egyptian cotton sheet, or high-quality Pima cotton, minimum 300-thread count, percale weave, two-ply thread.

Do You Really Need A Portable DVD Player?

Category : Uncategorized

Have you ever been on a long boring bus or train raid just looking out through the window with out anything to do? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to watch your favourite’s movies on your way to your destination instead? A portable DVD player allows you do just that. A portable DVD player is a small DVD player with a small screen attached to it allowing you to watch movies where ever you. Now you might be thinking so what, Portable DVD players are nothing new. That’s true but it’s only in recent time that they have become inexpensive. Today almost everyone can afford a portable DVD player.

A portable DVD player plays regular DVD discs or “Digital Video Discs”. A DVD disc is 4.72 inches (120 mm) in diameter and can store 4.7 GB of data. They work in the same way as CD discs but utilize a shorter wavelength laser and can therefore store a lot more information on a disc than your standard CD.

Most Portable DVD players can read regular CDs as well but is still not suitable to replace your portable CD player. This is due to the fact that even if DVD players can read CDs they are specialised to handle video media and will as such not handle music as well as a unit specialised for musics. This does not need to be a problem and you might very well feel that the sound quality in a portable DVD player is good enough to use it as a CD player. You will however feel differently if you are a “Sound snob”. CD players can’t play DVD discs since reading a DVD requires more advanced and sophisticated technique than the technique in a CD player.

One my wonder why portable DVD players hasn’t been available at low prices for a long time when the technique used is similar to the technique used in CD players and portable CD players have been around forever. The answer is simple. A portable DVD player requires a large amount of miniaturization of technology to make it possible to fit so much into a small container. A portable DVD player does after all not only contain a DVD player but also a flat screen, all of which should fit into something that you can easily hold in one hand.

I mentioned earlier that portable DVD players today have become cheap enough to allow the average Joe to get one but does one actually need one. The simple answer is no. You could just bring a book or a deck of cards along with you on your trips which both would give you something to do on your trip and are considerable cheaper than a portable DVD player. A portable DVD player could however give you a lot of fun and a cheaper model could very well be worth considering since they can bring you some fun even though you don’t actually need one. And sometimes one just feels like spoiling oneself with something one don’t actually need. I know I do.
