Water bed owners are among the most loyal of mattress consumers. Water bed mattresses aren’t right for everybody, but those who love them feel very strongly about them. Many people consider water bed mattresses to provide the ultimate ideal for comfortable sleep. To many people, there is nothing so soothing as being lulled to sleep by the gentle movement of their water bed mattress. Water bed mattresses are also long lasting and easy to use.
Water bed mattresses are very low maintenance, but there are a few simple maintenance steps you can do that can help lengthen the lifespan of your water bed mattress, as well as increase the comfort you can experience from your mattress. The most important components in the proper care of your water bed mattress are the periodic addition water bed conditioner to the water in your mattress and maintaining an appropriate water level in your mattress.
Water Bed Conditioner
Adding water bed conditioner to your water bed mattress periodically will prevent the water in your mattress from becoming stagnant. If conditioner isn’t added as it should be, stagnation will result, and a bad smell originating with the stagnant water will emerge from the water bed mattress.
Failure to add conditioner to the water in your water bed mattress can also decrease the life span of your mattress. Deterioration of the mattress will accelerate as a result of algae growth within the mattress. Algae growth can result in hardening and cracking of the vinyl material from which the water bed mattress is made.
To maintain your water bed mattress, you simply need to add eight ounces of high quality, multipurpose water bed conditioner to the water in your mattress once every eighteen months. The best place to find high quality water bed conditioner is from a water bed dealer.
Proper Water Level Maintenance
Keeping the water level in your water bed mattress is an important part of proper water bed maintenance. Overfilling and under filling can both result in damage to your water bed mattress. A mattress that has been overfilled is subject to stretch out. As the vinyl stretches, pressure will be placed on the seams that can cause it to weaken.
Additionally, water bed frames are designed to support the weight of properly filled water bed mattresses. A water bed mattress that has been over filled weighs more than it should. Therefore, additional stress is placed on the water bed frame. When the water bed frame is under excess stress, its ability to properly support the mattress is diminished. Damage to the hardware that keeps the frame together also can occur as a result of excess water in the water bed mattress.
An under filled water bed mattress can result in excess stress being placed on the water bed heater that can cause it to overheat. An adverse effect of an overheated water bed heater is damage to the vinyl material that comes in contact with the heater.
One way to determine if your water bed mattress is filled to an appropriate level involves placing a broom handle across one of the corners of your water bed mattress frame. As the mattress begins to fill, watch the frame. You will know that it is time turn off the water supply when the handle lifts off the frame as a result of the expansion of your water bed mattress. This might not be the most scientific way to be certain your water bed mattress is filled to the correct level, but it is an easy and accurate way to be sure.

If you are planning a major home renovation, an addition or landscaping, don’t forget about your neighbors. Although you may be willing to put up with the dust, dirt, debris and noise in order to improve the value of your home, your neighbors may not see it in the same light!
Within a subdivision or where there are other properties close to yours. Your construction project will be an annoyance to the neighbors. This can affect the relationship with your neighbors for years to come.
What might they face?
Noise from vehicles, power tools, and other mechanical equipment coupled with a continuous noise of driving in nails and banging on metal ventilation pipes can be extremely annoying. Your neighbors, who feel they have the right to a peaceful lifestyle, while at home, can truly be upset. Small children need to have afternoon naps, as well if you have neighbors who work night shifts and need to sleep during the day, they will not be allowed to accomplish their goals.
The numerous trucks parked on the street, in front of your neighbor’s homes, may create driving and parking problems. This can also create a safety problem if there are a lot of young children in the neighborhood.
All that is needed is a little wind and dirt, dust, waste construction materials, and garbage will conveniently end up on your neighbor’s properties.
The closer your neighbors home to yours, the more of an annoyance it will be. Where homes have side-by-side driveways, heavy vehicles may do actual damage to your neighbor’s property.
Your neighbor’s may have to put up with an unappealing visual image of a garbage dumpster and tons of building materials in your driveway for an extended period of time.
A situation that can be uncomfortable not only to your neighbors, but to your own family is inappropriate language used by the work crews. (This is something that should be discussed with all contractors at the time of contract. Contractors should be informed that inappropriate language will not be tolerated under any conditions).
What can you do to help reduce the pain and anguish suffered by your neighbors as you increase the value of your property?
The first point is to notify your neighbors before the project starts. Don’t let them wake-up to the sound of trucks rolling into your driveway. If you tell your neighbors what you are going to do, how long it is going to take and that you will do everything in your power not to inconvenience them, it will go along way to peace and harmony.
Be sensitive to the hours of the day. Tell contractors that they can only work between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. There is nothing worse than being woken up, or not being able to enjoy your dinner. If possible, don’t allow contractors to work on weekends.
Ensure that the contractors understand that they are responsible for any and all damage to your neighbor’s properties.
Ensure that the contractors understand that they are responsible and that it is a priority, that they retrieve and cleanup any and all garbage and/or debris that ends up on your neighbor’s property. All though this applies to all home renovation, remodel or landscaping projects, it is especially important with any roofing project. Roofing projects have a tendency to have enormous amounts of debris scattered for long distances.
If it is a project such as landscaping or an addition where a lot of the work is being done outside, you should ensure that the work area is properly protected in order to prevent children from using your construction zone as a playground with the possibility that they could get injured.
If your project is raising a lot of dust, it is a good gesture to provide your neighbors with car wash coupons. On the same note, it may be appropriate to offer to have your neighbor’s windows and siding washed.
Once the project is fully complete, people can hear themselves think again and the garbage has been hauled away throw a neighborhood barbeque and don’t be cheap, hamburgers for the kids, steaks for the adults and you supply the beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages. The neighbors will be dieing to see what you have done to your home to see if they might be an annoyance to you and your family in the near future.

Transforming your home’s basement into a finished space can prove to be very rewarding. Frequently the additional living space is used for a variety of entertainment functions including: Recreation Rooms, Bars, Gyms, Billiard Rooms, Home Theatres and Family Rooms. In addition, Bedrooms and Bathrooms are also incorporated into the floor space. Typically the square foot cost of finishing a basement is significantly lower than other floors within the home.
Planning is critical before starting a Finished Basement project. From a financial standpoint, first determine how big your budget is and how you will finance the project. Will a mortgage be required or can you refinance or obtain a home equity loan?
From the project standpoint, carefully consider what you want to use the space for. As part of this consideration, consider ceiling heights, existing pipes, Oil Tanks, and Heating and Water systems. Also consider lighting. To make a Finished Basement cozy, warm and comfortable, the number and kinds of lights to install is key. In addition, consider natural lighting. Can additional windows be installed and will they be appropriate for the finished space?
Installing a Bathroom in a basement can be a challenge, particularly if a pump-up system is required. It is important you meet with a plumber before you start any work, as they will have many questions and requirements for your bathroom. Potentially the most onerous aspect of installing a Bathroom may be the removal of some of the cement flooring. This is a very dusty and messy job!
Also consider heating. Does your existing furnace have the capacity to support the additional space? If not, you will need to consider putting in a bigger system or creating a secondary heating system.
Finally, and probably the most important aspect to consider, is dealing with moisture. A finished basement will quickly loose its charm if water problems create mold and mildew. Basement floors and walls should be sealed and insulated to reduce moisture content in the basement. Even with these precautions, a dehumidifier may be required.

What are heated driveways? The obvious answer is, “a driveway that is heated,” but what actually heats the driveway? The best driveway heating systems are radiant heating systems, similar to indoor floor heating systems. There are primarily two methods for heating, electric and hydronic. Electric systems use a line-voltage cable, while hydronic systems generate hot water then pump it through plastic PEX tubing. The heating elements are embedded in the surface and use resistant heating to heat the surrounding area. Most systems incorporate an automatic sensor that detects inclement weather to activate the system. Electric systems tend to be more efficient, require less maintenance, and heat surfaces quicker. Hydronic systems are usually slightly more expensive to purchase and install, but the operational can be lower depending on their local fuel rates. Both systems have their advantages, however, the electric systems are gaining a lot of interest due to their price, ease of installation and threatening future of the cost of fuel.
Why install a driveway heating system? Some of the obvious benefits are of course, not having to shovel your driveway again, avoiding injury due to slippery surfaces, and having the confidence that your driveway will be cleared when you need to use it. Other notable benefits include; adding value to your home, preserving the life of your driveway, and avoiding damage to bordering landscape with harmful salts and chemicals.
Where and when can you install a system? Driveway heating systems can be installed in almost any location, in almost any medium (including concrete, asphalt, under pavers, etc.), and nearly anytime of the year (depending on the medium). The most popular and ideal time to install a system, is during new construction. However, with weather permitting there are no limitations when to install a snowmelt system.
How do the systems work? Snow melting systems are composed of three main items: the heating element, the controller, and the activation device. The heating element can be either an electric resistance cable, or PEX hot water tubing. These heating elements can be installed in almost any medium. The simplest application for installation is under brick or stone pavers and in new pour concrete. Asphalt can also be used but the installation methods call for more care and labor to avoid injurious contact to the cable because of the asphalts temperature and abrasive nature during the paving process. These systems are controlled by either a wall-mounted control box for electric systems, or a small mechanical room to house a boiler, pump, manifold etc. for hydronic systems. Both types of systems use manual and/or automatic activation devices. Available automatic sensors include aerial mounted or pavement mounted snow switches. These sensors activate the system when there is moisture present and the temperature is below approximately 38 degrees. Most systems also include a manual timer to preheat an area before a large storm to curb snow and ice accumulation.
Who installs them and Who sells them? Electric snowmelt systems are fairly easy to install, and any experienced “do-it-yourselfer”, contractor, or electrician would be a candidate for installing a system. There are several vendors of driveway heating systems, however, Warmzone, Inc., is a dedicated source for matching your project to best valued solution. As anyone knows who has ever carried out a remodeling project in their homes, this undertaking can be very expensive. But if you can do a lot of work yourself then you can actually save yourself money. One particular project you may want to try for yourself is to install tile flooring as this could end up saving you a lot of dollars in the long run.
If you were to contact one of the many flooring installation contractors that you see advertised in your local newspaper or phone directory, you may find that they will charge you an extortionate amount of money to do the work for you. However, by following the 10 points that we provide below you should be able to install tile flooring that not only looks great but which will get your friends and family talking about every time they see it.
1. First off buy yourself a good set of knee pads which you can purchase from any good quality DIY or hardware store. Not only will your knees be thanking you but the rest of your body will as well.
2. Before you start laying the first tile spend a lot of time working on the layout of the tile flooring. You don’t want to find yourself in a position where you have just laid the last tile only to find that you have made a mistake at the beginning and so you need to tear it all back up again. Taking a little extra time on working on the layout will save you a lot of heartache as well as headaches in the future.
3. At all times follow the recommendations made by the manufacturer with regard to the installation of their tile flooring product. These people have been in the business for a long time and they know what works and what doesn’t.
4. Now you are going to start to install the tile flooring but take your time over it. A rushed job will end up becoming a botched job and could result in you having to take up and re-lay the flooring again.
5. Only lay the tile flooring when you are well rested and are able to fully concentrate on the project.
6. Buy the tools which are best for the job. Although you may think this is a waste of good money you never know you may want to use them again in the future.
7. When getting your tools and materials, ask questions of the staff in the hardware or DIY store. Remember they are actually paid to help and will probably have some knowledge on the project that you are going to be carrying out.
8. Make sure that your workspace remains clean. Not only will this ensure that your tile flooring will last longer but it will also keep you safe while you are working.
9. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. The more tiles that you lay, the better you will get at it. So when you first start to install tile flooring choose an area where it is less noticeable or where less people are likely to walk past it.
10. The final point is pay attention to the detail. By doing this you will not just have a nice looking tile flooring but a great one.
Keep these points in mind when you start to install tile flooring and you will be amazed at just how easy it is and just how great it looks once completed – and think of all that money you have saved as well.

If you are concerned about asbestos exposure you are not alone. Many individuals wonder if they have been exposed, and if so, what they can do to help protect their health. If you think that you have been exposed to asbestos or are looking for ways to prevent an exposure, look no further. We will go over some of the health problems that arise from asbestos exposure, and what can be done to prevent them.
Asbestos is a mineral fiber that has been used for a variety of different applications. Many homes may have this material in their insulation, as it is a fire retardant. Once exposed, individuals can inhale the microscopic asbestos particles and take them into their lungs. Once there, the fibers can cause lung cancer. If prolonged exposure occurs, an individual can also develop cancer in the chest cavity and abdomen.
It is important to note that many individuals have experienced brief exposure and been just fine. The fine asbestos particles are difficult to see and get rid of, so it is common for them to remain in their air for long periods of time thus increasing the risk of cancer. Smokers are at an increased risk for side effects due to exposure.
If you think that your home may have asbestos there are several places that you want to look. It is important to remember that products today do not contain the fiber, only things built in the 1970’s or earlier.
- Steam pipes, boilers, and furnace ducts could be insulated with an asbestos blanket or asbestos paper tape. If the fibers become damaged or are repaired improperly, they could lead to exposure.
- Resilient floor tiles- the backing on many vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives could contain asbestos. Sanding the tiles or scraping them could release the fibers.
- Cement, millboard, and paper that were used as insulation around furnaces and wood burning stoves. Repairing or removing these appliances could stir up the fibers.
- Door gaskets- in furnaces, wood stoves, and coal stoves.
- Sound proofing or decorative material sprayed on walls and ceilings. Sanding, drilling or scraping the material could be harmful.
- Cement roofing, shingles, and siding. This usually only cause a problem when sawed, drilled, or cut.
If you think that you have asbestos in your home, don’t panic. If the material is good condition, you can leave it alone. It is only when these materials are disturbed that there is a problem. If you find a damaged area- discard it using asbestos gloves and a facial mask. Your local health or environmental officials will be able to walk you through the proper disposal procedure. Always check with them when beginning any remodeling job.
Remember, the only way to find out if something contains asbestos is to look at it under a microscope. Enlist the help of a professional, and let them handle the details. They are trained in such removal procedures and can help ensure the safety of your family and loved ones.

If you spend any time outside you know that sun-damage is hard to avoid. People go out in droves during the summer to enjoy the freedom of being outdoors. We choose to ignore however, all of the damage inflicted on our skin and hair by the heat and UV rays, not to mention the possibility of dehydration. It is a must to protect yourself from the harsh rays and sometimes drinking and suntan lotion does not always cut it. No need to throw in your beach towel yet, because we’ve found the perfect solution to the seasonal dilemma.
A lot of people try to beat the summer heat by relaxing poolside. Combining work and play, swimming is the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax. You get the chance to cool off in the water as well as getting in some exercise without working up a sweat. When you submerge entirely into cool waters of a pool, you are keeping your body out of harm’s way and enjoying the reduction of your body temperature. Now, if you could keep that in-water experience going out of the water, sun and humidity would no longer be an issue.
poolathon.com Pool fog can make this a reality. Pool fog systems are ingeniously designed to improve the atmosphere, landscape, and humidity of your pool area. Making a summertime classic even better, the natural fog mechanism solves all the warm weather problems you might encounter. Here’s how it works: Pressurized water is forced through specially created nozzles. Out of these nozzles comes a fine, delicate mist in a gentle yet steady flow. The mist is comprised entirely of water broken down into minuscule droplets, each of which is smaller than a single grain of salt. These water droplets suspend themselves in the air, making a beautiful tropical effect appear all round your pool and surrounding area. As the mist descends and evaporates the temperature is decreased by up to 30 Fahrenheit.
How does pool fog actually protect you from sun damage? By replenishing the moisture in your hair and skin as it evaporates on you, pool fog has visible benefits. Frizzy, brittle and unmanageable tresses are the result of the heat of summer. When your hair isn’t dried out, you can see how much healthier and vibrant it is. Also, you’ll love how soft your skin is without even using creams or lotions, just by diminishing the amount of natural moisture you lose from sunbathing. Additionally, by keeping your body cool with mist while in the sun you can maintain a normal internal temperature, meaning you’ll feel refreshed rather than worn out after a day by the pool.
With bad hair days a thing of the past, flawless skin, and a feeling of rejuvenation, you’ll find keeping your summer styling is easier than ever. No more drowning your hair in products to get the moisture it needs and creams and foundations won’t live in your medicine chest any longer. Your body will thank you for keeping it healthy and gorgeous and summer can finally be properly embraced for all of its virtue and merit.

Redecorating your bathroom using quality and high-end products can produce an average return rate of over 90 percent.
Since bathrooms and kitchens are big on the minds of home buyers, quality bathroom suites, bathroom fixtures and finishes will sell a home much faster.
