Plasma TVs are Hot

Category : Uncategorized

Plasma TVs add a new dimension to watching television. The huge screens with the life-sized characters make the viewer feel like he is in the room with the characters. The viewer feels as if he is a part of the action. The plasma TV screen may be several feet wide and high and only a few inches thick so they can fit into most rooms. If you are used to the smaller conventional style televisions, when you first see a plasma TV with its big screen, it takes the viewer a few minutes to adjust to it because the viewer is not used to the size. But the viewer will quickly adjust to the size of the television.

The traditional television is based on cathode ray technology where a beam of electrons is shot through a tube in phosphorus atoms. The atoms light up and produce the image you see on the screen. After the cathode ray technology came the LCD technology. LCD technology is based on liquid crystal pixels consisting of red, green and blue held in between two layers of glass. An electrical charge makes them light up and produces the image on the television screen. This is similar to the functioning of a computer monitor screen.

The plasma technology is a relatively new concept in televisions. Plasma technology consists of xenon and neon gas filled cells. When electrical current passes through these cells, they light up in the different colors and produce an image on the screen. The intensity of the electrical pulses results in different shades of each color pixel. The screen can range from forty two inches to sixty five inches. The screens are flexible to the touch since they are so big.

Unlike other television technology the plasma screen can be subject to burn-in. This is a situation where if an image is on the screen for a certain period of time, the image will burn-in and will have shadow remain on the screen. If you use your television for video games, this is something to take into consideration because burn in can result from video games. Even so, the plasma screen is terrific for the graphics of video games.

Plasma TVs are not cheap. They start at approximately four thousand dollars. Depending on the style and features you want, the price can be higher. Once you decide on the style and model you want, shop around to find the best price.

How to Activate Your Entire House from the Living Room

No other room in the house offers the feng shui potential that the living room does. This room is central to family life and to feng shui. When it comes to feng shui, no other room can compare to the living room. That’s because the living room is the ONE room in the house that can be activated according to all nine sectors of the bagua or lo shu square — making this a very important room, indeed.

When you want to affect the feng shui of the entire house, you should begin by applying feng shui enhancements or remedies to the living room. The benefit is that the living room can boost the feng shui of other parts of the house that may have afflictions or are missing or shouldn’t have a particular enhancement.

For instance, if the bedroom is in the north sector, a water fountain would be a great feature for enhacing career feng shui. However, water in the bedroom is not recommended. But, water in the north corner of the living room will help boost that sector’s feng shui with beneficial water energy in the corresponding corner.

How is this possible? Think of the yin-yang symbol in the center of the bagua. This symbol is called the “tai chi” — yes, just like the martial art exercise. This tai chi can be applied to any size space and is referred to as the large tai chi or small tai chi.

As an example, you can apply the bagua to your lot that your house sits on. This is called the large tai chi. The small tai chi would be to apply the bagua to an individual room — such as the living room — or to an area such as a desk. In applying feng shui to the living room, you are activating the small tai chi.

Be aware, though, that depending upon the sector, you may not want to apply all enhancements. For instance, if your living room is in the northwest corner of the house, then it would not be advisable to add candles to the south corner of the living room because an open flame in the NW sector of the home is very dangerous.

I actually know of someone whose house began to burn down from candles that were placed in this sector. More importantly, is that the NW is the sector of “heaven” or the patriarch or breadwinner of the family (if the breadwinner is a man). With that caveat in mind, do proceed with making changes to your living room. By doing so, you will instantly improve your feng shui for your whole home!

1. Arrangement, arrangement.
The whole point of a living room is to create a room where the family comes together or where guests can be seated and all can enjoy conversation and each other’s company. Living rooms are the place of celebrations and good times, so they truly benefit from proper arrangement.

Many times, living rooms suffer from a L-shaped configuration caused by L-shaped sofas or by position a sofa and loveseat at a 45 degree angle to one another. This creates conflict and a feeling of being unexplainably uncomfortable in the room. Remember, televisions and fireplaces aren’t the focal point of a living room — people are.

Instead, arrange the living room so that sofa and seat FACE one another… Don’t worry: you’ll still be able to view the fireplace and TV, but you will instantly and dramatically improve your desire to be in the room and you will cultivate more loving and harmonious relationships. Better still, you will improve the flow of energy in the room. So, get to moving those sofas!

2. Add some red and gold.
To make certain that families are harmonious and enjoying good relationships with each other, be sure to add some elements of red and gold together. This could be a vase of red carnations and gold daisies, or it could be a pillow with gold and red colors. Red and gold together help calm conflict and create good feelings. Be sure to add these two colors together wherever there are conflicts or angry feelings.

3. The picture of happiness.
Be sure to hang a picture of a happy family or occupants in the living room. This picture can influence the entire family. Hang the pictures on an East wall to benefit family relationships. You may also wish to add pictures according to their direction in the living room to boost a particular area. For instance, a picture of a beautiful lake or waterfall would be wonderful on the north wall (career/opportunities) and a large, beautiful tree would be excellent for the east wall (health/family relationships).

4. Add some “yang” to your living room.
The living room should be a good balance of yin and yang. However, a little extra “yang” or positive energy is especially beneficial. This can come from the addition of a red accent wall, a bright chandelier, or a moving object.

5. Boost the lucky corner in the living room.
Where is the lucky corner? This is the corner of the room that is opposite and diagonal to the main entry to the room. If this corner is in the SW, W, NW, or NE, then boost this corner with a beautiful geode, bowl of semiprecious stones, beautiful vase, globe or other earth feature. If the lucky corner is the south or southwest, then boost the chi here with a nice tall bright lamp. If the corner is in the north, add a fountain here. If it is in the east or southeast, you can have a fountain here or add a grouping of beautiful lush plants or pretty flowers.

New Flexible Concrete for Rebuilding of New Orleans

Category : Uncategorized

Most of the I-10 Freeway corridor in Louisiana was a disaster in itself before Hurricane Katrina. The road is scalloped and very difficult to drive on, especially for trucks, which use I-10 as a major distribution channel to deliver America the goods. As we repair and replace sections of I-10, bridges, levees, streets, etc we should take a look at some of these new flexible concrete materials which a 500 times more resistant to cracking, 40% lighter and could help in the bumpy road issues, which destroy equipment and cause dangerous safety issues for traffic. There have been lots of roadway tests and the new flexible concrete has withstood the challenge.

I propose some departure from previous thinking and use some of these space age type materials in the rebuilding of our new New Orleans. By using some of these new materials on a large project we may get an incredible economies of scale to assist us with costs. Now for many things this flexible concrete may not be desired, yet for other projects it will be considered to be from heaven? Another technology is inflatable concrete, which might be worthy as a back up against future levee breaks? Using flexible concrete with inflatable concrete back up we will have a system which can act more like a portable swimming pool in your back yard, able to give a little. This way when Big Overweight Katrina does a belly flop into the pool it will flex a little extra with the waves?

physorg.com/news3985.html

We need to be thinking of our advances in materials and our present period technologies, because this is not 1965 when much of the 350-mile levee system was build and re-enforced. Please think on this.

Power Red: A Few Facts About the Color Red

Category : Uncategorized

The color red is most often associated with power and passion. It is a fierce and emotionally intense color. Red symbolizes speed, sexuality, and style. Fast cars are red. Beautiful women wear red clothes and red lipstick. Red is also the color of romance and love. If you want to express your love for a woman with flowers, the flowers must be red. In all cases, whether red is worn by a woman, or used in home décor, it will always attract attention.

Red often gives conflicting messages. Red means “stop” when used on a street light, but it means “go” when worn as lipstick or given as flowers. Red means danger when used on signs and fire extinguishers. Red means both romantic love and sexual lust. Red is the color of Communism, but it also symbolizes Christmas when mixed with the colors green, white, and gold.

There are many variations of red: scarlet and vermilion are the shocking and extreme reds, while pink, maroon, and crimson are subtler reds.

Fashion experts always recommend at least a splash of red when dressing for a job interview or any other important meeting, because red symbolizes power, decisiveness and leadership. In home décor, red is rarely used as a base color but often as highlights. One wall of a room may be painted red to create a feature wall that attracts attention. A sofa may be splashed with red cushions. A centerpiece of red flowers may be used for a special dinner event.

Red is so intense a color that it doesn’t suit everyone. A rule of thumb: drive a red car, but wear black. Red clothing has the effect of making a person look fuller than they really are. In all instances, red is an extreme color and should be chosen with caution.

How To Install Vinyl Siding

Category : Uncategorized

Vinyl siding is a widely approved procedure by builders, architects, and homeowners to preserve the home exterior. The primary reasons for using vinyl siding are its cost-effectiveness and ease of maintenance. Installation of vinyl siding is a relatively simple process that transforms the appearance of the property. However, to derive maximum benefit associated with it, it is important to adhere to the proper installation instructions. The Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) offers a program to several people, contractors, customers, and students alike, to enhance the technical expertise in installations.

The tools required for the installation include those commonly used in carpentry: chalk line, screw driver set, tin snips, hammer, and level. A utility knife is frequently used to cut, score, and trim the vinyl siding

The specific installation procedures depend largely on the manufacturers. To allow expansion and contraction, it is ensured that the panels move freely from side to side. While fixing, the lock is placed in proper contact with the piece below. The panel is nailed in place without stretching. The nails and fasteners are placed in the centre of the slot, and care is taken to see that the head of the nail is not driven too tightly against the siding nail hem. It is generally advisable to leave a minimum clearance space of quarter of an inch.

The corner posts are used to cover the ends of the panels. So generally, alterations to the posts both on the inside and outside are not advised. The installation procedure is fairly simple and is basically a form of enhancing the outdoor finish. Constantly emerging new techniques serve to boost the appearance of vinyl siding. Several accessories are also available to complement them. A j-channel is used to trim the ends of the panels. The vertical seams overlap to keep it closed. User-friendly versions of the installation techniques have turned it into an easily adopted, hassle-free practice.

New Tax Breaks for Energy Efficient Home Improvements

Category : Uncategorized

If you would like to make your existing home more energy efficient and get some help paying for the improvements, you need to know about the Energy Tax Incentives Act of 2005. The new law provides a $500 lifetime credit against your federal income tax for the cost of certain energy-saving home improvements that you make to your home after December 31, 2005 and before January 1, 2008. Up to $200 of the tax credit may be applied to windows.

As you may know, a tax credit is far more favorable than a deduction of the same amount. Deductions only reduce the amount of income that is subject to tax. A tax credit, on the other hand, is a dollar for dollar reduction of the tax due when you file your income tax return. So, if you are in the 28% income tax bracket, the new $500 credit is equivalent to a tax deduction of nearly $1800!

Here are highlights of the new provisions:

There is an overall lifetime cap on the credit of $500, and a maximum of $200 of the credit may be applied to qualified window expenditures. Subject to those limitations, you may receive a credit for the sum of the following:

Building Envelope Components. Ten (10%) percent of your expenditures for so called “building envelope components” will qualify for the tax credit. Building envelope components include the following:

any insulation material or system which is specifically and primarily designed to reduce the heat loss or gain of a dwelling unit when installed in or on such dwelling unit,
exterior windows (including skylights),
exterior doors, and
any metal roof installed on a dwelling unit, but only if such roof has appropriate pigmented coatings which are specifically and primarily designed to reduce the heat gain of such dwelling unit.

To qualify for the credit, the building envelope components must be installed in or on a dwelling unit (including a manufactured home) located in the United States that is owned by you and used by you as your principal residence. Installation of envelope components in a second or vacation home or rental property therefore will not qualify for the new tax break.

Only new components are eligible for the credit and the components must reasonably be expected to remain in use for at least 5 years.

Energy efficient property expenditures. Amounts paid for “residential energy property expenditures” will also qualify for the credit up to the following specific limits:

Up to $50 for any advanced main air circulating fan;
Up to $150 for any qualified natural gas, propane or oil furnace or hot water boiler;
Up to $300 for any item of “energy-efficient building property.” This includes certain qualifying electrical heat water pumps, electric heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, central air conditioners and natural gas, propane or oil water heaters.

Expenditures for labor costs for onsite preparation, assembly or original installation may be included. Improvements must be installed in or in connection with a dwelling unit located in the United States that is owned by you and used by you as your principal residence.

There are energy efficiency standards described in the new law that your home improvements must meet, so some investigation on your part will be necessary to be sure that the improvements will qualify for the credit. For this reason, if you hire a third party to do the work, your written agreement with the contractor should include the contractor’s guaranty that the installed property will meet the energy efficiency standards of the new law.

There is one potential trade-off, if you use the credit. Many improvements to your home will increase your “tax basis” in the property, and this increased tax basis may, in turn, reduce the amount of capital gain that is realized if you sell your home at a profit. The increase in tax basis that would otherwise result from energy efficient improvements that qualify for the credit will be reduced by the amount of the allowed credit. Since the tax credit decreases your tax basis, you are likely to have more capital gain at the time of sale. This will not affect you if all of the capital gain realized at the time of sale is protected by the $250,000 exclusion ($500,000 for married couples) for gains realized on the sale of your principal residence. But even if there is an increase in the taxable capital gain realized when you sell your home, it will almost certainly be outweighed by the advantage of using the new income tax credit currently.

Like so much of the Internal Revenue Code, the new provisions encouraging energy efficient home improvements seem unnecessarily complicated, but we have to consider the source – Congress! However, a bit of patience and careful planning will bring you some very real tax savings and help the environment to boot!

HVAC- The Trane Stops Here

Category : Uncategorized

I’ve been sweating all day today. It’s 104 degrees outside, but I work indoors where it is supposed to be air-conditioned!

Our Trane air conditioning (heat pump) unit is 20 years old and it has been a good one. However, today decided it couldn’t take the heat anymore. Yesterday, it seemed like it ran all day but the house didn’t feel as cool as usual. We thought it was because we had been going in and out while cleaning the garage. We also had the oven on because it was birthday Sunday and the family was coming to our house for dinner. We didn’t get concerned until we noticed it was still rather warm inside (80 degrees) after the doors had been shut for several hours. While laying in bed about midnight I heard the unit try to kick on, but it made a strange sound and gave up. By morning it was evident that we had a problem.

I started calling local HVAC repair companies and found a guy who could come out that very day. It would be five o’clock, but hey, that’s better than having to wait until tomorrow night or Wednesday, which was the soonest some of the repairmen could get to us.

I was hoping for a loose wire or that the unit only needed a boost in Freon. No such luck. The fan on the compressor motor was getting stuck and was about to go out completely. He oiled it and charged the coolant. He said it might last a day or a week, but we would have to replace the unit soon-perhaps before the end of the season. He and my husband agreed it just isn’t worth putting $500 into a new fan motor and other parts that would provide a temporary fix. That wasn’t what I wanted to hear. Repairs and replacements such as these never come at a good time.

We didn’t have air-conditioning in the home I grew up in. We had an attic fan that sucked in hot air from the outside. At night, we were plenty cool-almost too cool. We didn’t know what we were missing until my parents installed central heat and air when I was a teenager. It didn’t take long for us to get used to it. Today, it didn’t take but a few hours for me to realize what I was missing. I have become spoiled. What a wonder that we can walk over to the wall, adjust a dial and be as comfortable as we desire!

Our next step is to get several quotes from places that sell energy-efficient units. I worked for American Standard/Trane for about five years before becoming a freelance writer, so I know I want to purchase something that has a high SEER rating, which can save as much as 40% on our electric bill. If you think of it that way, whatever payments we have to incur to purchase a unit will be offset by the lower monthly heating and cooling bills. Another positive thought about replacing the unit now is that when we decide to sell our house, having a new HVAC system will be a great selling point.

All’s well if you simply look at the situation in the best light possible. We’ve decided to focus on all the wonderful years of excellent service we had from the unit, rather than complaining about what we will have to spend on what was once considered a luxury item-nice cool air-conditioning. Ahhhh!

Gain Extra Seating with Bar Stools

Category : Uncategorized

Today’s kitchen can become a complete entertainment center thanks to a sleek kitchen and bar furniture, including a breakfast area with a stylist breakfast bar and bar stools. Many people remodel their kitchens to accommodate a small bar area where they can grab a bite to eat before work or entertain friends with cocktails at a dinner party.

The kitchen has become more than a place to cook due to new technologically advanced appliances and less traditional furniture. Space-saving appliances such as ovens and microwaves combined not only reduce cooking time but save a lot of space too.

With more space, smart homeowners have more space to accommodate an additional seating area to satisfy their entertaining style. It could be another table, a counter with stylish bar stools, or even a couple of lounge chairs.

If you decide to create a little bar area in your kitchen, you need to find the best location for it. Many people disassemble one wall and install a bar counter instead, or leave two pillars and a four-foot riser to be used as a counter. The bar area should not block the traffic in the kitchen. That’s why the best location for it is near the wall, or if that’s not possible, then on an island in the middle of the kitchen.

A bar counter in the middle of the kitchen requires some space around it for comfortable seating and allow the kitchen to function properly. Don’t fall prey for tricky salespeople who may try to sell you a counter with cabinets bigger than your kitchen can accommodate! The access corridor around the bar area should not be less than 3 ft wide.

Luckily, contemporary bar stools require much less space than their traditional counterparts usually seen in restaurants and pubs. Bar stools for home use are much lighter and more artistic in color and style. Since people spend less time at their home bar than behind a table, contemporary bar stools are usually backless or have a very low ergonomically designed back. The most popular ones are swivel, with sturdy legs. Contemporary bar stools can be made of aluminum, fiberglass, or metal.

There are many bar stool options available on the internet. Customers can choose specific heights, colors, wood color and type and seating fabrics for bar stools creating full custom sets. Customers can also choose from free samples of fabrics and other upholstery types, finishes and wood samples. This way, you can have a set of bar stools to perfectly match your current home style. There are web sites that allow you to send in your own fabric to be used as upholstery for the bar stool set.

A great finishing touch to your bar area is to install a radio or small TV in to watch while you cook, eat a quick meal or relax over drinks.

Bamboo Home Decor

Category : Uncategorized

Bamboo home décor is a growing market. In the past decorative items made from bamboo have been reserved for homes that have specifically designed their homes around an Asian theme. Now bamboo home décor has transcended cultural design lines, and they are being used for just about every style.

First if you are trying to design an Asian themed room then bamboo home decor items can be a quick and easy way to achieve your design goals. You can use bamboo room dividers, bamboo wood shades, bamboo paneling, and coordinating bamboo furniture to tie your Asian them together. If you want to create a special Asian cultural look, such as Japanese, then you can add additional bamboo décor pieces that possess characteristics from that culture.

For other types of design styles you can use accent bamboo home décor pieces to add texture and style to your design. For example you can use a bamboo vase with colorful orchids to add color to your room, you can use bamboo frames to display family photos, or you can use bamboo candle holders to display your candle collection and to help add an ambient light source to your room. As you can see bamboo décor can be used as either the main design feature in your room or it can be used as a more subtle accent design feature. The important thing to remember when designing a room is to keep your pieces in balance. If you have several large pieces of bamboo furniture then you will want to use accessories that accent the size and shape of the furniture with taking away from their beauty and without fading into the background.

Bamboo, a vital building tool that grows 10 times faster than trees, is an increasing popular choice of furniture in America’s home. Used Appliances

Category : Uncategorized

Very often, one need not waste money on new appliances – used ones can do just as well, provided they are in the right condition and have been maintained well. Many a time, one can save a considerable amount of money with a late model, reconditioned appliance.

Before buying a used appliance, it is important to gather information about the used product. By reading consumer magazines and contacting consumer organizations before making a major purchase, you will be better informed and make a better choice.

You can go online to look for used appliances. There are several sites that offer quality, used appliances with limited warranties. In fact, there are sites that are dedicated to second hand buying and selling. Many of these appliances are scratched, dented or reconditioned and are sold at very low prices.

If you go to a local used appliance shop or purchase a used appliance from an individual, it is important that you thoroughly clean the piece that you purchased. You can do this by mixing up a batch of white vinegar and water for smaller appliances. This gets rid of stains in coffee makers and odors as well. For larger appliances, bleach mixed with water should do the trick. For cleaning ovens, (if they are not self-cleaning) a regular oven cleaner is advisable. Just make sure that the stove that you purchase is in good shape. If the oven is too dirty, it might not be in working order, or it may be too difficult to eliminate all the grease and build-up, especially in the broiler area. Look for clean, used appliances, and you’re probably going to have better luck as far as future wear and tear goes.
